Today I found Betty my little gorgeous piggie had died during the night I'm so sad. She leaves behind Hattie they are both around 6 years old I am not sure what I can or should do for Hattie now she is alone. She was looking for betty after I removed her. What's the best way forward. Many thanks in advance for your help

If and when you feel up to it you could look into getting Hattie a new friend. If you're not looking for a permanent addition because of her age you could ask a rescue to let you adopt/foster one until Hattie passes away, then you could return the other piggy.

In the meantime you could try her with a baby friendly (no sticky out bits for her to chew) cuddly toy, to see if she wants to cuddle with that.

Also, spend more time with her, give her lots of things to do in her cage and make a fuss of her.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is always very upsetting to look after a grieving piggy when you are struggling yourself with what has happened! @helen105281 has given you our link with tips.

We have got a good standard rescue locator on the top bar where you can date Hattie with suitable rescue piggies that are guaranteed healthy and not pregnant or have safely passed their 6 weeks post neutering operation wait. I have done this with bereaved sows of mine several times and have always got a very loving relationship out of it (with both sows and neutered boars) as the piggies could ultimately choose who they wanted to live with. Age and gender are not as important as mutual liking. Settling your bereaved piggy and making sure that it is happy and has its needs taken care will give you something constructive to do and will give yourself the space and time to grieve in your own human time.

You are very welcome to post a tribute to Betty in our Rainbow Bridge section whenever it is right for you.

thank you everyone and for the advice very much appreciated. not sure what to do regarding another friend for Hattie as i'm not sure she will be around for too much longer and i would be afraid to put her through the stress of bonding she is a bit of a cantankerous old woman and I'm not sure would enjoy a new friend her and betty had been together so long i rescued them they had been kept in the base of a large hamster cage for years. I will have to have a long think about it all ......

I am so sorry for the loss of Betty, we have a rainbow bridge section should you wish to leave a tribute for her there.

Keep a close on on Hattie, for the next few days and pay her extra attention as I am sure you will, she is likely to be quiet for a few days. Just make sure she is eating and drinking. Once again so sorry for your loss x

Hi guys , so its been few days since we lost Betty and boy do we miss her! I have never owned guinea pigs before these 2 but dear oh dear i did not realise what fabulous little personalities they have gosh i feel so bad for Betty so was so dam sweet just lovely!....she had just learnt to trust people and come out of her shyness and enjoy life then she gets taken...Hattie is ok looks a bit lost in her large hutch so i put lots of cosy cavy stuff in there. She is eating and drinking quite well but i guess we cant know how she feels still undecided if to look for another friend for her....just wanted to update you all as you were so kind to give me advice
