Betty's Scratching A Lot

Noticed yesterday that Betty is scratching a lot. Combed her fur with a nit comb and checked her skin. Nothing seen and her skin isn't red at all.

Have still booked her in at the Vets this afternoon just in case she has anything nasty going on.

As she is long haired it may just be hay bits stuck in her fur but we will see later!

Keep us informed! Betsy fell out with the nit comb long ago and she's not that keen on the brush either! Well done for managing to comb Betty.

It may be just dry skin, but it could be the very early stages of either mange or hay mites, which are both invisible to the naked eye. Check under the hairs at the bum end to see whether she has got tiny egg cases stuck on the hairs (in darker guinea pigs the hairs have tiny bumps, in lighter ones the egg cases look like somebody has emptied a peppermill over the body.

Your vet may decide to treat with ivermectin for mites as a precautionary measure. Please always complete the full three rounds course in this case.

She also seems to have come into season! she's being a little ratbag! chasing Hettie and popcorning around. Hettie's putting her in her place though!

Betty has stopped scratching now and her season has passed too!

She has her next injection on 11th.

No scratching from Hettie!
