why cant you give him any hay?

it is important to their good health ~ hay is vital

you need to give him water also

Your pig NEEDS hay and pellets. Hay mostly.

Also you should definitely put a water bottle.

Where did you get your guinea pig from as you got bad advice!

he needs pellets and water at all times.guinea pigs like to chew newspapers mine always chew theirs
he also needs hay maybe theres a farm you could get some from if you cant find any in pets shops

Try the grass, he will only eat it if he likes it. Hay is only dried grass after all.
It must be difficult for you in Vietnam as we can obtain most feeds in our countries and can advise what they need but you may not be able to obtain it there.

Water is as essential to piggies as it is to us! They need water bottles that get changed daily. Hay is essential, not only because it's a good dietry source, but as well it grounds down your piggie's teeth as they are constantly growing. You need to buy a good pellet food especially for piggies, burgess supa excel for example, and a nice selection of veggies that are suitable for pigs.

NB: Rhubarb, beetroot and potatoes are poisonous to pigs. Spinach has a sedative effect and is only good in moderation. There are other foods to be careful of too, search on here for the guinea pig shopping list!

Here's a link to the shopping list.

Read carefully, maybe print it out and use it when you do your shopping. I have shopping bags for us, then shopping bags for the piggies, then shared bags!

please get your piggie a water bottle and hay! :(
buy him toys to distract him- mine usually rip up newspaper when they're bored or have nothing else to chew. toilet rolls (without the toilet paper on) are great, mine love them :)

I think most people are only thinking what is right for the UK etc. The original poster lives in Vietnam and the food available there is not the same. I agree water should be available but water bottles as we know them may not be. Same with hay and pellets, whilst they are readily available here they appear to be unknown/scarce there, also with veggies, the poster will have to source local foods that are safe. For a lot of people it is not an option to import (internet purchases) items from other countries due to high cost / low wages in their own country.

Sorry for the rant but it annoys me when no one looks at the wider situation.

^ that's a good point.

they could always get a small bowl instead of a water bottle, mine have been fine with them :)

is hay not available there for other animals such as horses?

Newspaper should not hurt piggies, they have the long gut needed to gain value from it and the inks are vegetable based as these are the cheapest. So don't worry about them chewing the newspaper. They will even chew wee soaked newspaper, again, not a problem for their guts although it seems very nasty to us. They basically have different internal bacteria to us.

Hay is the best, they may still chew the paper though, especially if they like the tearing noise and the way it goes into strips....playing with their food....so don't worry at all.

Well, your piggies are lucky to always have green grass! My Swedish piggies sure don't get that! I assume you can always get green stuff of some kind anyway... Pick good grass for them every day and they will be very happy with you. Maybe you can even get dry grass, for variety? Just because most people on this forum seems for feed their piggies American timothy hay doesn't mean it's the only way to go. Ask someone who knows about plants and stuff about what trees and plants are edible to animals (maybe at a zoo?) and give them some branhes to chew on. Chewing on cardboard isn't all bad (but I guess it shouldn't be their main source of nutrition... :) )

are there any websites you could visit for companies who distribute hay in your area? is there any way you could travel somewhere that sells hay and buy it in bulk, or a friend/relative who could buy some and send it to you?

Do you have access to grass as a hay substitute? Maybe in parks that you could pick and then wash? Guinea-pigs really do need either grass or hay (or both), as grass is the main part of their diet because it's so high in fibre (which is essential for their health).

Is it possible for you able to buy hay on the internet from somewhere in Vietnam, so the shipping costs wouldn't be too high?

I can see that you're trying to do the best you can, for the situation that you're in.

Who told you this, thats wrong, they NEED water, peelets and hay! And you could also use fleece blanket insted of newspaper and sawdust.

Ben, sawdust is the worst for piggies I'm afraid old chap. It irritates their already sensitive respiratory system. Google aspen and megazorb! Fleece is even better, or the not so good option is wood shavings. But NEVER go for sawdust :)p:)p:)p

No we dont have any source for helping guinea ... In here... IS SUCKS you know :( They dont care about animal...:((

What should i do now . My GP coat is now bad :( They not soft anymore

Have they got dirty? If the beddings not been right they will have got dirty.

Did you manage to find hay for food and bedding?

Has your guinea pig enough to drink and IS it drinking? A waxy, stiff coat is one of the symptoms of drying out.

Can you give it water that you have boiled and then cooled, and give it by spoon or syringe.

What i mean is in here . They think GP is the animal dirty , and they kill them so so much :(
My GP now in hair loss :( Oh no this is realy realy bad :(

Vets !? No vets for small animal and reptiles here . Just for dogs and cats only . Some people do have experiment about small animal but they not work anymore :(

It sounds like a fungal condition, you can order products here to treat it if you cant get anything from where you are, email chrissie and she will help you

http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/

you will probably need the micro neem and Lavender and Myrrh lotion.
You also need to make sure you piggy gets plenty of pellets/hay/veges and fresh water

If you have trouble getting hay or pellets this site will ship to you

http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/

It could also be mites so you can use either revolution or ivomec to treat this, the sheep ivomec is the one i use and it can be borught online,i would advise buying it and then getting the weight of your piggy so we can advise on how much to dose.
if you research and make some calls you should be able to find a vet to see him,you do need to treat this fairly quickly or he will continue to get worse.

You do need to give them water either by a bowl or bottle.

Vegetables

And for the hair loss - can you take a photo?
