Evening all,

I'm hoping I can grab some seasoned opinions on Junie's upper lip.

I've had a read around and the general consensus is leave a lip that doesn't appear infected alone, as they tend to heal well. However, Junie's lip is almost half hanging off, which is what is worrying me.

She's fine in her self, eats and drinks fine, annoys the other members of the herd as per usual ect.

Is this vet worthy or am I just being over protective?

I'll put some pictures up as soon as I work out how, can I upload them straight from my phone?

Really appreciate your time,

Chris

Hello and welcome to the forum. You will be able to attach photos once you get the words New Born Pup under your name. Use the attach files button.

I would think a vet trip would be needed if it’s a deep cut.

Hi and welcome

If the wound (bite or injury) is that severe, please see a vet promptly. A stitch in time may come in handy for long term looks if it is more than just a straight forward bite wound. Your girl will need painkillers/anti-inflammatories and your vet may also consider an antibiotic, depending on the severity.

Once your registration is finished you can upload pictures. Since we are not part of social media not all formats may be supported. The one way that works for everybody is via the Attach Files button underneath your post when you write it.

Thanks for your replies,

For extra information I noticed the cut, which seamed dried of any blood, on Sunday. I've no idea what caused it. My best guess would be fighting as we lost our matriarch last week and she's always fancied herself as the boss.

Please have that seen by a vet before the bank holiday; your piggy needs painkillers and may need an antibiotic in order to prevent infection or an abscess down the line. Stitching will also be needed.

It looks to me like a full-on defence bite from the other piggy involved in the confrontation who didn't see any other way out.

Remove any huts with just one exit so no sow cannot be boxed in with a frontal assault the only way out. If tensions continue please separate the piggies involved for good. The death of a leader can sadly lead to a group falling apart if two sows are contending for leadership and neither is stepping down.

Here is more practical in-depth information:

Bonds In Trouble

All the best.

This definitely needs veterinary attention. One of our deaf/blind piggies split open his lip, and it required suturing. It healed very quickly, but you do need it to heal properly, or you’re likely to have ongoing problems.

Oh gosh poor little lady, did you manage to get her to the vets 🤞

Thanks for the replys all,

She's booked in for tomorrow at 10, if only for the peace of mind that she's ok.

Their enclosure is definitely up to standards. It's bigger than the recommended size for 7 sows to be comfortable and we have 5 left now. It even has a little 2nd floor which I've not included in the sizing. all hides have 2 or more exits and is laid out in a way to prevent trapping.

The pigs live indoors in the office so are normally always monitored and they do annoy each other/nip but never seen them fight in a way that would concern me. I'm only assuming it was as I don't see any other way she could have done it.

I would separate them if required as their safety/happiness is the main priority, but I would have no clue who she fought with out of the other 4...

Thanks again

Afternoon all,

She's back from the vets. The vet had a little look and said she was doing perfectly fine. She said it was healed nicely with only a little inflammation but no sign of infection.

She said we could "break" the healing on her lip and force it back into a more natural location and let it heal again, but that sounded like unnecessary stress and pain for her so politely declined.

We're to keep an eye on her and it's not catching on anything or causing her bother then just leave it alone which sounds sensible to me!

Thanks again for all your help :)
