I went foraging for wild greens this morning, mainly looking for dandelions and plantain. Came across this HUGE dandelion leaf.
There were a lot of big leaves in the area, but none as big as this. It may be the biggest dandelion leaf I have ever found.
Has anyone found any leaves bigger than this, or is it a record?
(Silly thread, I know!)

I think the dandelions in my OH's sister's garden may come close to matching it, but I didn't measure them! I wish I could
grow them that big . . . But then they'd be eaten before they got anywhere near that size

That is a mega leaf.
Although we have also found some awesome ones lately.
I shall pop over tot he local field tomorrow and see what I can find
Challenge accepted @7squeakers.

Wow! Is that 4.5 inches wide by 16 inches long! I had some big ones in the garden before my few days off. Not sure they were that big though!
I'll have a look tomorrow
What a challenge ;)

Has it been ate now :))

:D I was going to cut it up for the girls this morning, but thought it was just too nice a leaf to feed them (?). I should have pulled up the root so I could grow it a bit more!
Looking forward to seeing what you guys can find!

Lol! Mine was in the back garden, I didnt have to go foraging far.
So much for enjoying gardening... I can't pull up many weeds... The girls might like them ;)
Oops

Mat I proudly present my entry in the 'big leaf' event.
Just over 62cm long, which is 24.5 inches :D

Plus some rather large pieces of clover too (another favorite here),

It's been a productive morning in the office ;)

:D You are lucky then, @GPTV. I have got some dandelions in my garden, but they are very short and straggly. Apart from grass, the only thing I've got plenty of is moss! Blasted stuff!

Wowzers! That's loooong!
Dont u just love productive days in the office ;)
Lovely bit of clover too :)
I may just have to take my measure out with me when I walk the dog
See if I can find any longer ones, although I very much doubt it...
Are we getting competitive over dandelion sizes!? Lol.

I have lots of moss too :( bloomin stuff.
Not sure about lucky lol! My gran would have had a headfit to find any weeds in her garden-let alone dandelions of that size!

:D I went foraging the other day, looking for a dandelion leaf to beat @Swissgreys . The longest I could fined was only 18". Swissgreys still holds the record!

My next door neighbour has a thing about weeds in her flowerbeds. She is constantly weeding her garden in the summer; there is not a single weed in her flowerbeds. But then there is not a single flower either! It's like a display of earth!

Just found this, what a great thread, had a quick look in my garden but there's nothing to compare to these woppers! I deliberately let dandelions and milk thistles grow in my garden among the flowers and veg. I believe in the theory that a weed is only a plant growing in the wrong place, a garden with piggies is not the wrong place so they're not weeds :)).

Ahh, but your leaf was much wider than mine. ;)
Although I am sure that as far as our guinea pigs are concerned we are all winners for picking them such yummy leaves :yahoo:

I have never been foraging for my pigs as it always worried me what could be on the leaves.. How would I know for sure that an animal hasn't peed on it?

They are some very impressive leaves @GPTV

But is everyone else now walking around constantly looking for huge dandelion leaves - I think it's becoming an obsession (and I'm not sure it's healthy!).

I guess there are never any guarantees @Sian25 - even in your own back garden another animal could have come in and peed on something.

I live in a very rural area and tend to only forage for the guinea pigs after (or lately) during rainy weather.
I avoid anything on verges, at the base of trees, or in obvious pee spots.
I also wash everything first (even if I picked it during the rain).

i usually wash them off & as @Swissgreys says there's never any guarantee, but good advice there.

i have a quick check over of my foraging's too, just to make sure there are no slugs or snails present, mould/mildew etc on the leaves. i tend to think i had guineas on the back lawn at my parents & we had a dog, i never bothered washing the grass that they ate.. but i would if i picked dandelions etc. weird or what!?
i never picked from his obvious peeing spots & they were always ok most averaged out about 5yrs. just a little wash over should be fine if its just general plants, the hay we get from bags must have had fox, deer or some other wild animal wandering over it at some point, so fingers crossed :)
