what happened to the thread about treats by the way? I was about to write something on it last night and suddenly I could get onto the forum...

Know its changing the subject of the thread but.... I wondered what happened too. I was in the middle of writing a message on another thread and it took ages for it to send. Then it said webpage 'can not be displayed'. Reassuring that this happened to somebody else but I would hate to think people get hurt by what other people say. :'( Where did you here this 'Puggies Rule?'

I thought it was only potatoes that have shoots that were bad?

I have done that. My piggies do not have peelings with any sign of a shoot on or appearing :).

They have a few peelings a couple of times a week if that :)

Nooo i was agreeing with you kelly! I feed mine potato skin on occasion!

I thought it was okay as long as it didnt have shoots! O0

Wow, who'd have thorugh a thread about piggy treats would cause so much upset!

I haven't tried mine on anything other than pig food and fruit, veg etc yet - I got some chew sticks for them from P@H and Tiger ignored his, whilst Jeremy seemed very suspicious and wary of it! Neither of them have touched them though...

They like green/red peppers!

Ahhh its okay, toootally understand! You are an old skool piggie mummy, i dont think i could find it in myself to be mean to you! :smitten: ;D

there really is no need to get so demanding on this forum and dictate that you are right its big headed to believe you are never wrong watch Tre on the Apprentice I could throttle him big head or what, yes we all know things about piggys through learning on here and books and internet and of course our own experiences, I've kept pigs for over 30 years but DO NOT push my views and would certainly never hurt anyones feelings , you offer advice and if its taken great if not then ITS THIER CHOICE its their pigs so their choice, simple really, the only exception was drizzle pigs she made me mad and I said I will not be offering my advice to her again ,
it was so wrong for some one so dear to us to get hurt and it annoyed me there was no need for it, so come on girls CHILL pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee, lifes too short to go around upsetting people even unintentionally, give you advice then leave it at that :)

TOTALLY agree with everything you've said there! Very well said O0

Chocolate - I know dogs cant have it because they don't have a pancreas (i think that's it) which means they cant digest it properly... so I'm guessing piggies don't have a pancreas either ?

I know we can't give them branches or wood products from trees that bear fruit with stones, such as peach, cherry etc. Apple and pear branches are good though.

Onions and garlic are a huge no-no.

Watch out as well for cruciferous veg that if fed in excess can cause bloat - cabbage, kale etc. Some veggies are also high in calcium (parsley and kale to name a couple) and, if not fed sparingly, can contribute to bladder stones.

What are cruciferous veg? Would spring greens be included in this? We give our boys some greens most days :-\
Can bloat cause diarrohea or even death?

Also didn't know carrots were high in sugar, no wonder they love them! Usually feed two or three small slices every other day.

Can they really have Coriander every day? I usually alternate foods on a daily basis, ie mon they will have carrots, broccoli, tues they will have celery and pepper, wed similar to mon etc. Can you recommend any other foods that can be given almost on a daily basis? I have Vedra's book now and it says that Basil should not be given (I think it was Basil, must check that).

Cruciferous veg contain a lot of enzymes that can cause a build up of gas in the stomach and intestines which can be a huge problem in pigs not used to eating them. This sort of veg can be fed a few times a week but I certainly wouldn't feed daily. Spring greens are included in this - they are really just a type of cabbage.

http://www.guinealynx.com/emergencymedicalguide.html#bloat - diarrhoea is not a symptom of bloat but bloat is a fairly frequent cause of death in guinea pigs.

The best reference for vegetables is the chart on this page here - http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum...cavys-diet-read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html. It is colour coded according to what can be fed how often and why, along with detailed nutrition information.
