Junior Guinea Pig
Today marks exactly one month since Bijou finally has a companion in his enclosure again. After Momo, his first long bond, passed away in late January, and then the sudden deaths of Koki and Moses just a day or two after bringing them home, I didn’t expect to try again so soon. But I’m happy to say that Bijou now has a healthy, thriving friend!
Bijou now is 1 year and four months old.
Getting a third guinea pig wasn’t part of the plan after losing Moses and Koki so quickly. But while I was visiting my city, where I originally got Bijou, I happened to walk past a small shop. Right there on the sidewalk, in a little wire cage, was a single baby guinea pig, all alone and getting rained on. I didn’t even think twice. I asked if it was male, the seller said yes, and I picked him up myself and checked everything: nose, mouth, teeth, gender. He looked good and alert, so I bought him.
I went through the bonding process with Bijou, and to my surprise, Bijou accepted him right away! The moment they met, Bijou started popcorning a LOT, it was such a sweet moment.
Even with that good start, I was still bracing for the worst after everything that happened with the two guinea pigs. But not this time! He came weighing just around 200 grams and now, one month later, he's over 400 grams! I think he’s about 1–3 months old. He's doubled in size, full of life, and learning fast, Bijou even taught him how to wheek for food!
I named him Mime, in honor of Momo and Mimiu. And now, every time I walk into the room, I’m greeted by Bijou, Bode, and Mime all screaming like a party. Bijou and Mime zoomie a lot around the enclosure and popcorn together constantly. I am so happy to see Bijou finally so full of joy in a whole full month!
After everything, Bijou finally has a healthy little mate.
