Ive come home from work to find bilbos cage full of blood. Ive checked him all over and the only obvious injury is his bumblefoot.

Ive had a look at his lump because it looks different than usual cant explain it seems to be ...protruding more. It's popped in two places. It isnt actually oozing but stuff does come out if i give it a bit of a squeeze but no blood so thats what were its come from. Its sort of a grey color and mushy. It doesnt smell at all. I'm certain its not an infection.

So i let him out for a run to see if i could see any other injury with the blood. low and behold his foot started POURING blood. It terrified me. Ive managed to stop the bleeding and sealed it with some skin closures. The scab has come off it completly.

i dont know what to do about the lump. clen it out? Leave it be. ..? Ive rang the vets but no one picked up.

:( :( :(

For the time being I would get a flannel or some similar small cloth (spotlessly clean) wring out tightly in cold water, then gently press against his foot, hold it as still as you can until it stops. If he's not on antibiotics he will need some to stop any potential infection. Keep trying the vets.

I'm trying to get hold of my mother, she lives on the same road as the vets i go to.

Defo keep the foot elevated if you can, apply pressure and a cold dressing. Ice pack wrapped in towel (eg peas) or a cold compress but not for too long. Five mins max at a time. Leave a ten min gap and repeat (don't want to give him frost bite :) ). Contact emergency vets. May heal enough through clotting to last overnight, but get to vet asap.

Good luck

Ive manged to stop it for now ive wrapped it up in some sterile dressing and put some microporous tape over that.

He's already on baytril

Brilliant. If it breaks through, probably best not to remove dressing but add another one over the top. Keep up the pressure and cold compress/pack. Should clot enough again. He will need vet visit to get antibiotics as suggested. Maybe a trip to the gorgeous guineas website for info on their bumblefoot treatment too?

I already have some stuff for his fot of gg and stuff fromt he vets. its done this before but no were near as bad.

Keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't start bleeding again. I went through something similar with Willow.

Good luck xx

Sounds like a burst abcess, smell or not, grey mushy material sounds unnormal and more like pus. Be careful putting your own dressing on, I'm sure your capable but many people have brought pets in with home done dressings and caused more harm than good. A cold compress should stop any oozing. Your vet SHOULD always pick up, i cant believe the amount of vets that dont. try calling again. Where abouts are you? We may be able to advise you on a practice. Bleeding is always a bit scary, but try not to panic too much. It will be ok.

x

still cant get through its been engaged though. Wa slike this last time. He's been seen by 3 different vets and none of them thought it was an absess.

The first vet (who i wasnt confident with at all) tried to drain it but nothing came out and said It's probably a fatty lump. The girl i got him from said it had been there a year so were getting on for 2 now so surely if it was something nasty it would of got him by now?

the second vet who i was happy with (she seemed to know alot) said not to worry about it doesnt look nasty.

the 3rd pretty much said the same(last week).

His foot has stopped beeding for now, he's picking at the tape though. I'm trying to keep him occupied.

oh no so sorry, just caught up with this, could you get to the vets in case they havent put phone back on hook or something daft?

poor Bilbo, hope hes ok x

forgot to update this.

He's been seen again. The vet thinks the lump is a cyst thats popped. It's been drained and flushed. She said ideally he needs an op to remove the rest but as hes so old and has heart issues its a no no. So ill have to clean it and flush it every day. Hes back onbaytril to.

she checked his heart and stuff again. His lungs/stomach are clear and his heart is beating normally. woohoo.

Oh and hs foot is almost back to normal. Virtually all the swelling has gone and theres a tiny bit of scab left. so that big bleed must of at least done some good!

That's brilliant news, I am glad that he got better and you could get to the vets. :)

Little update. I noticed he's not eating :(

i got him out before for his meds which he took as usual no problem. I had a look at his lump it hasnt refiled and is looking like its starting to heal over. I did have to empy it yesterday but it wasnt nearly as much as in the vets. Ive give the lump its daily clean with some medihex and his tootsie which almost healed. after he had his meds and some kisses he ate some spinach, parsley and a cherry tomatoe. Ive also srynged him some water just to be sure hes had some.

hes currently asleep on my bed! little spends more timein there than i do.

Oh poor baby. It is a good sign he has eaten some vegetables. You are doing a great job of caring for him. I really hope he recovers soon.

Bilbo is 6 today and has been with me for exactly 1 year :)

Got him a melon and some fancy hay lol
