Healing vibes needed again please guys - for Billy this time.
I noticed a very quiet squeek when he did a wee on Wednesday so gave him some metacam to see how he got on. All seemed ok so I thought nothing more of it until I weighed him last night - he's lost 90g in a week!! As you can imagine I was extremely worried & took him to the vet this morning. He had some gunk in his willy which the vet cleaned & gave me septrin to give in case of infection. While we were there he checked his teeth - they weren't bad but the vet decided to rasp his molars just in case it was affecting what he was eating - he also did an xray which showed some crystals in his bladder8...
The vet said to see how he goes with the septrin & metacam & monitor the weight loss. He is wary at this stage to flush Billy's bladder of the crystals as he thinks they will just keep reforming.
What does everyone think? Billy is acting completely fine - up at the bars wheeking for food, eating, moving, weeing & pooping normaly too :{
I'm not having a good time with poorly piggies at the mo, although Patch does seem to be improving.

It is difficult when you can't be sure of the cause of poor Billy's weight loss. Your vet seems to have been pretty thorough!

I hope that Billy will feel a lot better soon!

hope Billy is feeling better soon. Big Hugs for him
Sounds like a v good, thorough vet though

Not syringe feeding him at the moment - he's eating & drinking fine on his own. I am aware how fast piggies can lose weight so I'm weighing him twice a day at the mo - he's not lost any more weight x

Good news - I hope that he will recover soon!

I've got my fingers crossed as well suzanne. Let us know how he does bless him x x

Sorry to hear Billy is now worrying you Suzanne. If it helps any, I have a pig with bladder grit (calcium overload). Her treatment has thus far included:

- Septrin & Prednisolone (for infection)
- Rowatinex (something to do with preventing stone formation - will research more)
- SubQ fluids 2x daily (essential as she does not eat or drink for herself, fluids are vital and more important given the grit)
- Massage pad 2x daily (the vibrations help prevent the contents of the bladder for settling and leading to stones).

There are other options for preventing the crystals/grit from forming stones but the key one is fluids, closely followed by the massage pad.

Thanks for this Laura xx
I'm getting a bit panicky at the moment - just weighed Billy & he has lost 20 grams since this morning but is still eating normally - he's not eating as many nuggets but he doesn't eat a lot of them usually. Should I start to syringe feed him even though he's eating?
Patch has gone bad again too - will post in his thread 8...

Variations of up to 30g are normal, depending on a full/empty belly and bladder. I would stop weighing him twice daily, it only helps to drive you mad!

Sending my vibes to both boys of yours!

Oh no, what a rubbish evening for you! You know where I am if you need me, even when I go offline. xx

Worth offering him some syringe-food given his overall weight loss, 20g since this morning may be something or it may be nothing, hard to tell at this point so best looking at the overall loss IMO. If you've got some sweetcorn or even just some extra veggies it might help. Extra hay too....worth trying anything, I've found. It's good he is still eating, one or two supplementary syringe-feeds a day should be ok though.

Thanks Wiebke, I'm just so concerned with him having such a big loss in the last week. You are right though I am going mad - spent the last half hour crying & wondering where I am going wrong with them all 8...

Suzanne, I've been there, wondering what I was doing wrong, it's not a fun place to be. Bad runs just happen sometimes, it's not your fault. If you were starving them then fair enough, blame yourself all you like, but we all know you're a good piggie mum. And you don't starve them. There's no reason for you to think you're going wrong at all, it's just bad luck, nothing more. Hugs. xx
