Heard the most unusual sound from one of my new Guinea pigs today. I’ve had guinea pigs for several years and never heard this sound before. It sounded like birds tweeting. Does anyone know what this sound means?

It could be chirping, which is rare to hear, nobody knows what it really means. Have a look on youtube, see if this matches. 👍

Hi and welcome!

Chirping is rare and very surprising when you have never heard it before. Because it is so unpredictable, we do not know what it means.

However, I have noticed that my guinea pigs react very differently to a chirper in the room than when I unexpectedly play a chirping video, so there is a clear situational component.

I accidently played chirping on youtube earlier, didnt realise my headphones were not plugged in, my pigs froze solid, then ran for cover. I have a feeling its a warning call

My CH teddy does this too (though she's a peculiar piggy in lots of ways), was quite surprised when I heard it for the first time. In Dutch we called piggies who make this sound 'watchers/watchmen'. She always seems to be in a trance when she's chirping. As far as I know it has been suggested that it is used as a warning, but it needs further research.
