Hi everyone,

I took Birt to the vets and Pets at home did pay for it. He was checked over thoroughly by the vet there - he was nice, he handled him well. And the vet said he remembered him from when he was there.

He said he doesnt have mites but his scabs on the back are healing. Although he didn't say exactly what they were or what caused them, he said he can tell they are healing.

He does have pressure sores on his feet which he had when he was in Pets at Home and vet confirmed these are also healing..

I was looking at Birt's back again this morning and it's really flakey, skin is dry and looks like dandruff.. Ive added some photos, if anyone may have had a similar issue with their piggy, I am going to be taking him back to another vet for confirmation.. just wondered if anyone else had experience of this?

Thanks!SAM_0566.webp SAM_0567.webp SAM_0568.webp

That looks like fungal to me, and if not mange mites. They can also get a combination problem. Does his hair come out easily when tugged gently? does it seem greasy at all? if you brush it the wring way does it fall nicely back into place or stay upright.

It is a good idea to get a second opinion.

Thanks Helen for getting back to me.

I can't help but think, are these animals looked after at all in Pets at home? When I first got my guinea Pig Agnes, who passed away last Oct - she had fungal when I first got her. Now looks like Birt has this issue too!

I'll get back to you with the hair falling back or stays upright soon and will let you know.

Definitely, second opinion won't hurt! Better to be safe than sorry

I think it really does depend on the store, I know someone who used to work there and had a really bad experience but have heard the opposite of some stores.
