Hi.

I haven't been on here for a long time. Last time I was on was when I adopted Birt from pets at home and he had mange which they failed to identify and sort out.

It's been a up and down journey, got his skin right. All his bald patches have grown back and his fur is so much nicer. Then he started to smell, his anus sack seems to have some sort of pus in it constantly which I have been back and forth to vets to sort out, it gets sorted but comes back. Now I have to clean his sack out more and more.

He seemed to be fine until Wednesday night when I noticed he was moving around like a sloth, and when I got him out to inspect, his left back leg wasn't moving.

He lets me press his foot and extend it, so I don't like it's broken or sprained. But he's so lethargic not himself. He wouldn't come out his hide for hours and couldn't move to get to his food or water.

I've been hand feeding him both and he take it. He's being weeing where he is sleeping. He smells. I've just given him a bath to clean his belly up, and i noticed very wet poo coming out.

He is lying down and I noticed discharge from both eyes and nose. He seems to be lying to his right almost to take pressure of his left leg.

I have looked on google and all symptoms point to scurvy but I don't understand when I give him veg with vit c in.

I am taking him the vets now but I just needed to talk to you guys. I feel I shouldn't have Guinea pigs. Everything goes wrong with them - although I feel it's a breeding issue caused by pets at home!

xx

Don't blame yourself. It really will be Pets at Home's fault.

I had a pair of boys from there, and one had every problem you can imagine... heart condition, cataracts, his teeth fell out, URI's, impaction, muscle loss which caused problem with his man bits.... to name a few.

You're taking him to the vet so you are doing everything you possibly can, and you obviously care for him very much.

I hope everything goes well at the vets. Please let us know xx

Hope the vet can give you some answers. I had this with my Ellie but hers was both back legs. An xray would be a good idea to check for any breaks to start with.

Don't blame yourself, you are sorting him out.He is lucky to have you.Fingers crossed

I think it sounds like you took on a piggie who wasn't very well from the start.
This is NOT your fault.
You are doing the best for your pet, and hopefully the vet will have some answers for you.

Hey guys, Thankyou all so much for your lovely words. It means a lot.

I've just picked Birt up from the vets, he stayed in overnight, had an X-ray and they've said he has "cellulitis" in his left leg around his knee. The vet said it's an over reaction of cells which causes the area to swell up and become painful and uncomfortable. Usually from something as a tiny pin prick/ wound or scratch which then has bacteria enter causing this cellulitis.

He has had antiflammatory drug, and anti biotics. The vet would only let him go until he started eating and drinking which he did.

I am to carry on with giving him the doses of anti flammatory and anti biotics for a week and then return him for q check up. Have to ensure he poos properly because they had to clean his bum out from soft poo all clogged up inside And ensure he carries on eating and drinking otherwise return him sooner.

He isn't very good at walking and is still dragging himself around. Thing is, the leg that is hurting is the left but he's dragging the right one too but this is clear of anything. He must be in a lot of pain poor guy

Glad you have a diagnosis. That can be the hardest part. I hope he responds quickly to the meds. My mum had Cellulitis and it was nasty.

Aw really? Sorry to hear, did she get better with it? I hope so.

Birt is picking up, he's finished all his medicine now and I've just give him a more thorough bath and cleaned him up ready to take him the vets for his checkup.

One thing I'm quite concerned about is, now he's not using either of his back legs. But the one that's fine he can use it, he's been dragging himself around more and more with his two front legs.

I try and massage it gently, and looks like he is going to use it again but then he goes back to lying all twisted to one side and sort of lying to the side like he's not putting any pressure down on any of his back end. I hope that makes sense. I can take a photo if that helps
