Hi everyone,
As you all know by now, Biscuit, my 18 month-old boar has had constant health problems but today, I thought I'd like to give you a little insight into what he's like when he's not sick and how cheeky he is even when he is.
This is a story about my friend Jerome (he's French) who piggy sat for us when Biscuit had just been diagnosed with a bladder infection for the first time.
Jerome had kindly agreed at the last minute to come round everyday and feed Caramel and Biscuit because our professional pig sitter had to cancel due to illness. Jerome has never had guinea pigs and he's quite scared of small animals so this was a big deal and we were really grateful.
The day before we went on holiday, I noticed some pinkness in Biscuit's pee so I rushed him to the vet where, after an X-ray, he was diagnosed with a bacterial bladder infection. I got Biscuit home and, in a panic, I tried to cancel our holiday. It was a weekend away for my wife's birthday and cancelling was really not an option. This was clearly spelled out for me by my wife in fact. I called Jerome to let him know what the situation was, fully expecting him to say that he couldn't medicate Biscuit and that we'd have to find another solution. Jerome was hugely supportive, and surprising and simply asked for instructions about how to syringe a guinea pig.
Despite texting several times, I didn't my wife's birthday to be spoiled by being in constant touch with Jerome so it was only after we returned that I was told exactly what went on.
Biscuit had only seen Jerome once before when he was just 2 months old and so we were expecting him to be a handful. However, the first time Jerome went to pick him up, he climbed straight into his arms. Upon being presented with a syringe full of anti-biotics, Biscuit opened wide and licked it all up. He sucked down his metacam and then began purring away in Jerome's lap. He did this twice a day for three days and, by the time we came back, Jerome didn't want to stop coming round. He was so surprised how affectionate and easy to handle Biscuit was that he and his partner have been asking about Biscuit and visiting at every opportunity.
I don't know how many guinea pigs would react like this and I think it's a great example of just what Biscuit is like.
