Hi all,

I can't believe how unlucky/illness prone Biscuit is. He's been recovering from a bad reaction to engemycin as many of you may know. Well, this morning, I was cuddling with him because my wife was using the mirror near their pen and had to open it. Since Biscuit was likely to get out and roam around, I picked him up for a cuddle.

I was going to put him back when he decided to jump from my arm (which he has never done before) and aim for my wife's make-up bag which was balanced on their pen. He hit the make-up bag and kept on falling, landing on the floor (laminate - no carpet) on his back! I was soooo panicked. I rushed him to the vet's and I'm waiting for news - they said to call around 2ish.

I'm so angry at myself for not holding him more firmly. Normally he just sits there on my arm. I always hold him bum outwards so his rump and belly are resting on my hand and his head is facing towards me/my elbow. He has never tried to jump out from this position EVER! I can't believe he fell.

He got up right away and ran off into a corner and was really screaming. I picked him up again and put him straight into his carry box with some hay and rushed him off to the vet. He stopped screaming and was eating hay when I dropped him off. I just hope everything is alright.

I am so sorry to hear about Biscuits fall :( Please do not blame yourself though as these things happen. It was an accident.

It is a good sign that he had stopped screaming and was eating by the time you got to the vets.

Good luck and please do keep us updated xx

Oh poor Biscuit, I hope he is ok. I think he probably just shocked himself. I have had this with a few of my hamsters who decided to leap from my arms onto the floor from a height. I will keep everything crossed that he is ok.

I hope that he is OK!

Piggies suddenly jumping off your arms to happen to all of us - don't beat yourself up too much! Biscuit just had a worse fall than normal.

oh god...poor biscuit....hope its good news from the vets, my very first pig used to do this all the time and on two occasions it was in the garden and i had to get my (elderly) neighbour on his hands and knees at his side of the hedge whilst i was on my side poking him up the bum (the pig) to make him run through...grrrr little minx's

fingers crossed for you.

x

Ps, maybe biscuit just fancied a bit of lippy on his piggy lips

Thanks everyone,

I just got the phone call from the vet to say I can pick Biscuit up at 4. There are no signs of any fractures or serious injury. She did say that if he has hurt his spine, it may take up to a day or so for this to become apparent. Rather than give him an anasthaetic and X-ray him, she's given him a strong painkiller and prescribed him metacam and we have to observe him for 5 days. I'm hoping he's just given himself a bit of a bump and nothing more.

And... if it does turn out that he wanted to put on some lippy, he'll have to learn not to jump for it and just ask my wife to borrow it!

Good news so far - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Biscuit and hope that he'll just feel a bit sore for a few days!

Is it just me or is Biscuit particularly prone to bad things happening?

Caramel has never been ill, weighs a good 980g - 1kg and never falls over. Biscuit always seems to be ill and just when he's recovering he gets ill again or, like today, falls. Is it just bad luck or are we doing something wrong?

Poor old Biscuit, please try not to feel too guilty it's just a run of bad luck, I'm sure you'll turn the corner soon and all will be well. :...

Aww, you're not doing anything wrong. It's just bad luck. Chin up :)

poor biscuit! no wonder you're worried. it's a good sign he was eating straightaway. my gladstone fell from my arms once,so traumatic, but he was fine, apart from the fact he broke his incisors and had to have soft food until they grew back.

:{

Aww poor biscuit, glad the vets went well though and I'm keeping my fingers crossed tomorrow he's feeling mch better. :) Get well soon little fella :)

It's not you..Hugs.....it's part of "The big Piggie conspiracy 2010" to ensure we slaves hand over a regular monthy payment to the vets without fail :)):)):))

I hope he'll be fine...and atm have no reason to think this won;t be the case ....

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your messages. Biscuit so far seems to be ok. The vet gave him Vetergesic yesterday and he's on 0.3ml of Metacam twice daily for the next five days.

He seems to be eating normally and his behaviour is unchanged so it looks positive for now. I think we'll know more tomorrow about whether he's actually hurt or not. So far so good.

Thanks again everyone x>>

I totally agree with this. There IS a conspiracy, I know it. {:|

Sorry to hear you had such a panic with Biscuit. I believe the vet is doing the right thing, giving a painkiller/anti-inflammatory, and just keep an eye on him. Fingers crossed there'll be no harm done.

I do find when pigs do something like that, we learn our lessons far more effectively than they...!

Oh no poor Biscuit! Silly boy, tell him make up is for girls and high maintenance ones at that (I can't stand it lol)

Please give him a cuddle from me!

JoJo decided he could fly the other day when being weighed and leapt out of the scales, thankfully only onto the table but he could easily have gone on the floor...will be keeping the scales on the floor in future!

Sorry to hear that Biscuit took a tumble, but glad to hear he's doing well now.

Pippa had phase of diving off the sofa (she did it about three times) with no ill effects, thankfully, just a shocked look. I did end up putting cushions on the floor just in case though!

Hello Everyone :)

Thanks as ever for all your messages. Wiebke, Biscuit is doing ok today thanks. He seems a little bit over-excited at the moment an can't realy sit still but he doesn't show any ill-effects from the fall. He's got a couple more days of Metacam but I'm hoping that's it for his mediciation for a while!

@Little Piggles - I should have seen this jump coming then. Biscuit has been trying to jump off the sofa for the past month or so - I keep grabbing him before he can actually leap. I think the boys must have seen a squirrel or something and are trying to show off! :)

As far as piggy conspiracies go, I can definitely agree with that in the case of Biscuit! We've had him and Caramel for four months now. In that time, Caramel has had no problems but Biscuit has run up over £200 of vet bills!

I'm hoping for a quiet couple of months at least now. It's not so much the money as I'm sure you all understand, I just can;t take the panicking and rushing to the vets and worrying about Biscuit all the time. I need a rest :)

BonBon played kamakazi off the sofa yesterday.. she went to jump on the arm of the chair, but missed it and landed on the carpet on the other side.. luckily its not a huge drop... my other piggie, Liquorice is a seasoned extreme jumper, being when she has a scare, she hits the floor running no matter where she is....
I always assumed they were fragile creatures, but when Treacle 'leapt' in to my arms one day.. she leapt 1 foot off the ground.. It makes me wonder whether we really know what they are really capable off?

Thanks BonBon. Any closer on deciding about another piggy?

Biscuit's a bit odd - in a good way any way. He doesn't seem to get scared by anything or anyone, climbs up on my arm when I go to pick him up and generally acts very un-guinea pig-like. I reckon he's part rat, or maybe squirrel I don't know....

Aww, glad Biscuit is ok and not broken any bones.

I can understand (as can others) your state of panic, as I would have been a screaming banshee.

Take care and I hope you get that rest you deserve.

Beth x

Not yet.. got to get round oh first.. it's not as if I need a bigger cage.. I have a spare one in storage though{:| bit small, but would make a temp isolation cage.. Liquorice is one of those ?/ she's very brave, but a big woose when it comes to the hoover or visitors.. she becomes Michael Schumacher's f1 racing car, zooms around the cage, and hides..

Dodge is like this, he also burrows and tries to climb...I think his father was a ferret...

I have an account at my vets now and have hidden my bank statements as I know the total is over £300 for the last three months but can't face reading how much...
