Hi everyone

Looking for information about the best way to give Bisolvon to our boy.

He was at the vets last week and was put on 0.6 baytril twice a day for a week due to being wheezy and a runny nose. It wasn't our normal exotics vet as he is on holiday.

We are just back from the vets as it's made no difference. His wheezing is on and off, sometimes I can't hear it and his nose dries from time to time.

Had a different vet who is cavvy savvy (ours is still on holiday) who gave him a thorough check. Teeth look fine still, he's put on weight (was 1.4 now 1.5), she could hear a slight wheeze but nothing untoward, no lumps bumps around eyes and chin, heart sounds good. Oh and a manicure much to his disgust haha

It's only the 1 nostril he gets the discharge (clear like water) and so she thinks it may be a nasal congestion problem and so prescribed Bisolon.

She said to sprinkle a pinch (like you would with salt on chips) on to his food so said I would put it on a veg as guaranteed he would have it all which she said is fine.

Upon googling I can see some people add it to a small 1ml syringe and give it direct so looking for people's thoughts/experiences on this?

Oliver is nearly 6 and on daily metacam at 0.2ml a day due to arthritis in front leg. He is a happy, sociable old boy and eating well as you can tell from weight gain.

Thank you in advance

Good on your vet for prescribing bisolvon!

You can make an extra cut into a small slice of cucumber and see whether he will eat the hidden powder. Guinea pigs have double the taste buds of humans and a multiple of that of cats, so they are usually very good at eating around what they do no like.

Mix 2 or 4 four doses of bisolvon powder in a little medicine bottle (available from a pharmacy) with 1 ml of water per dose, shake the closed bottle thoroughly, and then syringe 1 ml of the solution (it makes 2-3 mouthfuls depending on the size of your piggy). That is usually the more effective way of making sure that your piggy is getting the full dose.

Hi Wiebke

Thank you for them tips. The mixing the solution and giving by syringe I might try as he may cotton on to what I done this morning.

I cut up a slice of cucumber into mouth size chunks and sprinkled the Bisolvon over it in a dish and he ate every last bit. I had done that with his probiotic an hour after each dose of baytril so I knew he was getting the full effect instead of relying on him drinking his water.

He was a Mr Attitude with the Baytril but always knew I would win and would place hand over his head with fingers at each corner of mouth to get syringe in.

He comes to me for the daily metacam which is great and when I had to give critical care after his teeth procedure last year he loved it although think mixing a bit of fruit or veg into it for taste is what swayed it haha

Thank you again for the advice, it's so nice to speak to people here that help one another : )

Hi,
I have got now the same problem, with Almond. He is a 3 months old boy, and in the last two weeks he has been sick.
He has got quite noisy breathing in his nose, he has a little bump on the left side and a little noise in his left lung.
He is on septrin more than two weeks now, and in the last couple of days bisolvon, vitamin c as well.
They are on fleece, the cagemate is fine, I have changed their hay and I have got an air purifier as well (non-scented).
I bought a heat pad, and I do some inhaling as well: I put him into a carrier with some hay, and put a boiling water with chamomile tea next to it, and I cover the whole thing with clothes, this is 2x10min per day.
And he is still a noisy breather, sounds like your nose is full of stuff and try to breath. And he breath harder.
But apart from this, he has gained around a 100grams, he eats well, and his poops are small (he is still 600grams), but nicely formed.

I have realised he is ok with septrin, so he doesn't need any bio-lapis, like with other piggies+antibiotics.
So, I would like to know, should I make some break between the septrin and the bisolvon or not? (like antibiotics and probiotics)
Or can I do more/less inhaling?

Unfortunately I forgot to ask the vet.
He eats the bisolvon with cucumber, at least doesn't have to force sryringe it.

Thanks :)

Mine ate it on a tiny slice/sliver of watermelon (I checked with Simon at cat and rabbit if this was ok) a swatermelon is a rare treat it went down no problem....

I’ve always found it easy to give Bisolvon by sprinkling it onto a tiny slice of cucumber or damp herbs. It does work well.

Hi Kheops

Oliver is 6 and our vet thinks it's due to age and maybe some lung scarring from a previous uti years ago. A bit like a human having pneumonia when young and when older may have some lung issues.

He is getting on great now, I haven't had to use Bisolvon for the last couple of weeks but have it there should he get that bunged up way with his nose again.

Like yours, Oliver still ate, ran around pooped normal and no change in temperament aside from sleeping a lot he is starting to look older now bless him (greys at chin haha)

I think with them hiding illness, always get them checked by a vet for the smallest of things. I lost count on the amount of vet visits with Oliver but wanted to make sure all basis were covered.

It sounds like you are doing the right things, fleece, vet visits as you can never be too careful with these small guys. Do you find the Bisolvon helps him or that the Septrin has eased it?

Oliver started turning his nose up at the Bisolvon on cucumber haha so I started to sprinkle a bit on tomatoe with inside scooped out and so far he is none the wiser haha

Please see your vet again if the breathing does not imporve after two weeks on antibiotic and with using bisolvon.

I prefer to dissolve my pinch of bisolvon in 1 ml of water and syringe this after watching more than one of mine nibbled deftly around the veg bit that contains the bisolvon and leaving be.

So the thing is, we were at Simon two weeks ago, and we got the Septrin only.
On wednesday we were there again, we got another 14 days of septrin and now bisolvon as well (Simon was on holiday, so the replacement vet recommended me to probably we can continue with septrin for another two weeks)
I am just not sure can I give the bisolvon immediately after the septrin, or not, and can I do more inhaling or not :)
But I think I'll go back next week, if he doesn't improve and get a stronger antibio..

You can give the bisolvon at the same time as the septrin and you can do more inhaling.

When Oliver was on the Baytril he would get his morning doses. Baytril, metacam and sprinkle of Bisolvon as well as his probiotics an hour later. When I felt he needed the inhaling I still done it as required

Update on Almond, it seems to be a chronic, long term sickness...
We were at the Cat and Rabbit around 10 days ago, and Kim checked Almond. She heard the noise, and said the lungs are clear, so she wouldn't put more antibiotics into his small body.
So we are doing nebuliser stuff, we got a salt lamp as well, and keep him warm.
Apart from that noise (he does the noise 85% of the time and heavy breathing) he is absolutely fine: jumps, wheeks, popcorns, attacks new small towels in the cage, and he is on 740grams now (he was around 550 when the sickness started).
He sneezes, but the stuff is 95% clear (I have seen 3 times white stuff in his nose in the last 4-5 weeks).
Is someone has any more idea or has piggies like him?
