ive just been to give the piggys their evening veggy snack and was shocked to see a bloody lump in the corner of the girls enclosure (where 4 girls live together)
i poked some of the sawdust off and was horrified to find what i think is an aborted baby? its half formed (no fur skin over eye sockets etc but colouring of the skin and perfectly formed body/legs/head)
ive checked all four girls, none of them should be/should have been pregnant (they've been here since end september and never been near the boys) none show signs of having just gave birth, all four wheeking their hearts out and running round.
How do i find out who it came from? I'm guessing something must be wrong if they've aborted a baby? what on earth do i do? all four to the vets? none of them have blood or liquid round their 'bits' but the mess surrounding the baby showed an awful lot of blood :( wtf is going on?

Have you seen any signs before of any sort of pregnancy?

I would probably take all four to the vets since any one of them could be in a little pain if it was them. Perhaps take the aborted baby to the vets with you. They may know what to do about it.

You could also check the boys aswell just in case any of them are acting a little strange.

Hope that helps and I am sorry that this has happened.

What a shock for you. Definitely no blood on any of the girls? It does sound like an aborted baby, there's usually a reason for it as you say - I believe it's not always a problem with the mother though, which is good news if it is the case.

I agree that a vet check for all of them would be worthwhile. I hope you can figure out who the mum is/was - good luck. And big hugs! xx

I'm just waiting on my other half to come home then we're heading off to the vets.
i cant understand it, none of these girls could have been pregnant? its impossible! none of them showing any signs of having given birth, they seem a little skittish and upset that this 'baby' was there, they wont stop wheeking and calling, even though its been removed.

What a dreadful shock for you and your piggies.

I have know cases where sows have given birth to what appears to be a 'mummified' baby. These babies die during pregnancy and instead of being aborted at the time they become mummified and are passed at a later date - often along with the full term live babies when the sow gives birth. Dont know if it's possible for this to happen to just one baby and the sow to hang onto it for alot longer ?

Have you got a photo? I'm quit intreged!

Hope everything is okay, keep us updated hun. Sorry no insightful words I'm no help what so ever.

BIG HUG!

I hope that you can get to the bottom of it, and that all girls are OK! What a way to end the year! :{

I had a mummified baby born here to one of the sheltie sows, but like Teresa says it was passed along with a normal healthy baby (full term). Quite horrific to see though. Hope all is ok. One of them should have a separated pelvis, if she's had to pass this... so hopefully you can tell which one it was

hi sorry for not getting back sooner, its been hectic here. while waiting for other half to get home, one of the girlies had another baby, same as the other sadly dead, no fur, skin over eyes, small but piggy shaped. i happened to be with them at the time so saw which girly it was :(
Got her to the vets, there was a third baby in the box when we opened it up, and she had half eaten it (vet said she felt threatened being in the box so tried to eat her baby, i was quite horrified over the whole thing)
i can't believe i didnt even realise she was pregnant, but then ive never really 'checked' as i had never had her near the boys.she didnt look any bigger than the others. i can only imagine one of the children or my OH have had her out to play the same time as boys, but usually they are not allowed in the piggy rooms without me and i would not allow boys and girls out at the same time.
Vet reckons she had a fair few weeks to go, and seems to think it could have been a premature birth set off by eating herbs (piggies had a herby salad yesterday night) so in other words it happened because of something i fed her :( i feel dreadful about that.
Mummy has been checked over, and doesnt seem to have any ailments, infections or problems, but ive been advised to keep an eye on her and make sure she gets plenty of good healthy veg to boost her system after giving birth. Shes been allowed to come home which is a relief.

*sigh* I'm sorry little piggys :(

thank you for the quick responses they were very much appreciated.

and pigpig, I'm more than disgusted at your question, and to send me a private messages begging for photos of my piggys dead baby(what was it you called it, a lump??) was just going too far.

I'm so sorry this has happened hun, very traumatic for you and piggie. You weren't to know she was pregnant so it's not your fault you were just giving them a treat. I'm glad you found out which lass it was and she's doing fine.

I'm also sorry you had to deal with such an insenstive request hun.

I'm so sorry to hear about your piggies- hope the piggies are ok and also that you are ok! I bet it was horrible to experience it :( xx

it wasnt nice i'll admit that, especially as it was so unexpected too. i have horrible visions in my mind now from what i saw, and when i look at the 5 healthy babies we have here i feel dreadful at the thought that in a few weeks there could have been an extra 3 popcorning about :(

but at least i have learned pregnant piggies shouldnt have herby things to eat as it can induce labour (i think they said parsley is the worst for this?) i never knew that.

Splishkey.. I'm so sorry this happened to both your piggy and you.. I hope you both come through this ok.. Thinking of you.. HUG

What a terrible experience for you, and your little piggy. Hope she can make a good recovery, but I'm sure you will 'love' her better. xxxxxxx

Sorry, i didn't know you were that close, don't worry about the photo's, also i thought you called it a lump at first, still, don't bother with the photo, and good luck.

I consider that pigpig made a perfectly reasonable request when asking if it were possible to see a photo of the problem.

If it had happened to one of my pigs I would have posted photos without being asked.

Oh hun, you can't blame yourself, there's no way you cold have known. Sending big hugs to all of you.

Is it a reasonable request for someone so obviously distressed? If a request like that is to be made, the wording must be chosen very carefully and the response from the original poster respected wholly. The OP considered the sight rather gruesome and upsetting, and while a photo may help others learn something or help to confirm the problem, it is admittedly a difficult task to ask someone to do.

As upsetting as today has been for you Spishkey, I think you've handled things well. I am glad you were able to see which of the girls did abort those babies, at least you are able to try to draw a line under the events of today, look after your girl as she recovers, and not be left wondering who, when and - to a degree - why this occurred.

" If a request like that is to be made, the wording must be chosen very carefully and the response from the original poster respected wholly."

How would you have worded the request?

I cannot find where the OP used the words gruesome or upsetting.

The wording might not have been what was wrong, but although you might have found that easy, a lot of people, most people, would probably struggle - the main thing is that the guinea pigs are okay, and making sure that they continue to be, not asking for pictures - and as I said, it's obvious the owner is really upset (understandably) over this so it's just wrong to ask for pictures for your own knowledge.

Oh honey, I'm so sorry. I'm sat here in tears for you. It's not your fault these three beautiful babies are at the bridge, they were too special for this life. I am so glad you were able to help your girl, I really hope she is back to being well soon and not distressed by the situation, as well her sisters. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Pigpig, I agree, I think your question was disrespectful and the pm's. You need to think of the piggies human parents, not just learning. I'm sure you could google appropriate terms and find internet sites with the information you want, this is a child friendly forum and it wouldn't be appropriate to put these pigtures on here anyway. Not that I'm fighting with you, I can understand why you'd want to see so you can learn. But as I say you maybe able to find info on the net.

I can't agree with your vet - even if there was a small possibility that an early labour had been triggered by her eating herbs I would suspect other underlying problems. Please don't feel bad.

I'm sure your sow will make a good recovery. :)
