As some of you will know, I introduced a new ex breeding sow into my herd a couple of weeks ago. I weighed her on the 9th June - 930g, weighed again today - 867g :...

Now I'm not sure how worried I should be, or if that fluctuation can be normal.

When I got her she had just finished nursing babies and had quite enlarged tummy around her nipples which I assumed was from her feeding - now it is all flat there, could the weight loss be attributed to this?

Also - she has had quite a big hair cut since she was last weighed - not sure how much hair weighs :red but she is a Peruvian so it was pretty long.

She also seems to be drinking a lot of water - seems like far more than the others (from what I can see).

Should I be worried about this? She is eating fine.

Shes probably getting over the pregnancy, a little bit of weight loss post pregnancy is normal, but this is quite bit. The drinking is probably also do do with the pregnancy as she has been producing milk. I would weigh her daily and if she continues to make a downward tend of weight loss then pop her to the vets next week.

x.

You know, you're talking about a difference of 60g. It really isn't much. I wouldn't start worrying until you see a loss/gain of around 100g. Different times of day, mood, appetite, you scales can all produce differences of that sort of size. Really, I wouldn't worry.

I should, as ever, add that if you are worried, get her checked out. I'm a great believer in "wasting" a vet's time over nothing that could have been something rather than not going to your vet with a nothing that might be a something...

I think I confused myself with that :)
