this evening as I went to put the GP's into their hutch Ginger was squeaking a lot, not in alarm just wheak wheak wheak as she wandered around, she was happy to be picked up and cuddled but once again once she was in the hutch she rushed around wheak, wheak, wheak. She had settled down when I went to check on her later.

Slightly concerned that there is something wrong and I don't speak Guinea pig..

Sounds like she is just after some attention! They do learn that they can get a reaction by making a noise and sometimes they are just being enthusiastic and having fun.....

If there's no obvious problems then she might just be 'chatting' away to you albeit very loudly!

Here's a great website with an explanation of noises so you have an idea what means what but piggies have a wide variety of sounds and quite complex communication for a small animal so this doesn't cover everything you might hear...

Guinea Pig Sounds

Bless her, she sounds like a peficlly normal happy and inquisetive pig to me :tu:

Thanks that's very reassuring, wonder why she has suddenly found her voice? And if her sister will too?
How long have you had the girls? I think when they get settled and start to learn their routine (especially at feeding time) they come out of their shells and get quite chatty :D It's rare to have a moment in our house when Joe isn't chatting away to you (or to himself). It makes me smile :)

We have had them for about 6 weeks so think they are about 4 months old :)

That's a normal noise... just a 'happy, puttering around, getting pats, loving life' kind of sound. Some pigs are more vocal than others and they can have different 'voices.' I've had one pig that was very quiet (Linney), two that were very chatty (Frenzy and Sundae), and one in the middle somewhere (Hadley.) And whereas the others were more twittery, Sundae has a slightly harsher, more squeaky voice. She sounds like someone rubbing a balloon with wet palms. I can always tell when it's Sundae being noisy as opposed to Hadley.
