today i was holding Lilac and it was quite nobody else was in the room and i was supporting her bottom not squeezing or anything, she bit my thumb really hard and drew blood i'm just wondering why this might have occurred? i was only holding her for a couple minutes before she was on the blanket on my lap and she loves that (mostly because its heated) does she dislike me? :bye:

I'm so sorry! You may actually have to visit a doctor if the bite gets infected. When guinea pigs bite, they bite with FORCE. She still likes you, don't worry! It could have been you had some sort of food residue on your finger, always wash your hands before handleing a guinea pig.

Lilac could have needed to go to the potty or has has enough and wanted to go back in her cage. How long was she on your lap for? I'm ever so sorry this has happened to you. Hugs x

Hi! Please check that your finger is OK and disinfect it. You need to see a doctor if the bite is deep.

Guinea pigs can bite really hard instinctively in defense if they are on edge and something spooks them, a sudden noise or movement. They can also tweak rather hard if they need to go to the toilet or want to get away or get their way.

thank you both! i woke up and it actually still hurts just mainy stings . i just haven't had a piggie do more than a nibble and that was a little surprise i just hope i didn't distress her. i'll give my bite a couple days if it worsens to the doctor i go

Ouch! I feel your pain. I have been very lucky so far, only had the odd nip and then that was just his way of saying 'enough cuddles thanks'!

yes i've been nibbled but it surprisingly hurt a lot i feel like there's a little thorn in my thumb :c

Oh no! Poor you, piggies can be unpredictable when there are sudden movements/sounds/spooked, if it hurts now then you should at least put some savalon or antiseptic cream on it. Maybe try the doctor tomorrow if it still stings/hurts/sore.

Oh poor you!

I have a piggy who bites a few times. I've found that if she pushes her nose up it's a warning sign and I only cuddle her with frequent breaks just in case she needs the toilet. Tess soon got used to this and has become much more friendly.

I hope all is well with you soon ximage.webp

my boy Blink has bitten a couple of times and drawn blood too so I know how much it hurts! was going to ask if there was anything that could cause them to do it? He is only 4 months old so hoping it settles down he has bitten my teenage daughter twice too and drawn blood!

Sorry to hear about the biting. We had a vampire piggie 'Vimto' that literally used to turn round to snap and bite you... It took a around good 7 months but she is no longer a biter, she was just very timid and scared. She started off by just freezing on lap but then gained the confidence to bite, she has drew blood countless times.
With both your piggies @shaz_dubz and @Ayla you could do with trying to find out what is causing the nipping, do they want the loo? Are they just feeling insecure? Maybe try cuddling them in a cosy? With Vimt's we started again giving lap time and cuddles for 1 minute then popping her home and built up slowly with food treats, it took us around 4 months to get to a 5 minute lap time, honestly she was savage and I'd almost gave up hope of taming her for lap time. She will now happily lie down on my lap :) So just keep at it.

I hope your finger feels better soon, it really does hurt....

Thank you for the advice it is very much appreciated! Blink has no problem going to the loo whilst he is on your knee, I think he finds it funny! He is a real character and very excitable which I think could be the problem cos when he hears the "ouch" he really looks startled and it may sound crazy but looks quite sorry
I'm investing in some cozies so he know its nice quiet and safe time when he is being handled
