Hi, one of my pigs got bitten in the eye by another one. Took him to vet the next day and now he is on kanamycin sulfate cream and Corneregel. There is already 2 weeks since he got the injury. Must say the eye looks a bit better than it did before but i was expecting to see more improvement in 2 weeks. The eye is not swollen anymore but it still has redness in it, it's sunk and the interior of his lower lid can be seen. a bit of his sight came back (he can see the cream pouring into his eye and he's closing the eye), he does not have an ulcer. He doesn't seem to be in pain, is esting fine and makes the most poop amount i ever saw in a pig ever. How much time does it take for the eye to regenerate itself? In the picture below what can be seen red it' s the interior of his lower lid (i think this is what it's called)

Hi!

Please see your vet or another vet if there is no improvement at all within 3 days of an eye injury. This is not looking good at all and needs likely stronger medication like chloramphenicol.

Which country are you in?

@Abi_nurse

I'm from Romania. This clinic is the most specialised one in exotic animals from my city.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i thought these antibiotics creams are made for the eye not to catch an infection while the eye is supposed to heal by it's own. Is there any medication that can help the eye regenerate or all the medication has the same purpose: protect the eye from infections while it generates itself?

I asked the doctor if another stronger cream is needed for the eye but she said we should start with a not so strong one and see how it evolves because if we start with the strongest one what else will we be using if the eye is not responding to it? I never saw what an injured eye looks after 3 days of medication so i can compare it to my pig. How fast these injuries are supposed to heal?

How fast an eye in heals will depend a lot on the severity of the injury. However, after two weeks I would certainly expect it to be looking a lot better, and as your piggy’s eye doesn’t look like it is healing well then a stronger medication should be started.
Both of my piggies have had a haypoke injury which caused an ulcer and they were a lot better after 3 days and completely healed within 7 days.

So i found the document since we visited the ophtalmologist on friday, i will try to translate it as good as i can as i not very good with medical terms. A section of 2 mm on his lid at 12 o'clock (edema, inflamation and congestion). On his cornea there is an edem on his intern angle, opaque look of the cornea and the test with fluorescein is negative. Also in the anterior chamber there is a haemorrhage with a free coagulation in the ventral side.

He has been given kanamycin sulfate cream and corneregel (dexpanthenol) to keep his eye moisturized as the doctor said his eye is not shutting very well and he cannot moisturize his eye.

Also, when i first went to her i asked her how much it would take to heal as i read online that other piggies with hay poke get better in 3 days. She said that this is not a hay poke and thus will heal slower. She said that when he got bitten in the eye, there were little veins in his eyes that were injured and his eye is full of blood on the inside. I will give her a call today to see what else she has to say.

Sooo.. I called back and she said that is possible for him to lose aqueous humor, this is why his eye is small. Now i have to make an appointment to change the treatment
