Hello, looking for some advice! I noticed some black bits throughout the hind of one of my boars fur. He became quite distressed as I had a look through and therefore this picture had to be taken quickly and maybe not as clear. He has lots of rosettes and in general doesn’t like me rubbing his fur and I haven’t noticed any excess scratching. Hoping it’s dirt but the fact he got so distressed has worried me it’s may be a parasite of some sort? Thank you I’m advanceF321E6A0-E39B-443B-A656-4C272C70F2D5.webp

Looks like it could be lice or another parasite to me.
Best to get a vet to diagnose and give you the correct treatment.
Good luck!
I haven’t saw anything moving but won’t take any chances and will get them both to the vet. Hoping for someone to say it’s common and usually just dirt

Unfortunately not all parasites move; one of the common ones being static lice, often found clinging to the hairs on the piggy’s rump :(
Also the fact that he’s in discomfort in that area when you touch it would suggest something’s amiss unfortunately.

I have done a little more digging and think this could be it! Will ring my vet tomorrow for some best advice/check up. Thank you :)

Please see a vet; it rather looks like hay/fur mites to me. what you see are the egg cases; the mites themselves are invisible. They are not as pernicious as mange mites, which burrow their eggs into the skin, but some strains can be a bit hard to shift.

I remember my poor previous Guineas having mites years ago and it was heartbreaking seeing the damage they can cause so I will absolutely get them to the vet this week. Slightly relieved it’s the lesser of two evils possibly but horrible nonetheless. Thank you :)

Hey all, I have taken my boys to the vet and he will call tomorrow after he has a look at the suspected lice mites under the microscope. Until then I have been given xeno- 50 once every two weeks and advised to wash cage thoroughly and bedding at 60 degrees. My query now is what to do with plastic bed/litter tray and two wooden tunnels? Do these need to be thrown away or just cleaned as normal? Thank you

I’d give the plastic stuff a good clean and use it again, but tbh I wouldn’t use the wooden stuff again, unless perhaps you soaked it in something? It would take ages to dry though :)

When my lot had mites I gave the hutch a thorough cleaning with F10. First I hoovered it out (with the old hoover we use for the car) then sprayed every bit of wood I could see with a strong solution of F10 (2mls F10 to 500mls water). I used 500 mls of F10 solution in the end! Took me about 2 hours to do the hutch from start to finish! It was worth it though as the little blighters haven't made a return visit.

Yeah I gave the plastic a good clean and it’s two wooden tunnels and a log hidey. It would be about £30 to replace it all. I read somewhere that putting it in the freezer can kill lice? Iv left it in overnight but will maybe invest in new stuff. Thank you :)

Perfect I’ll invest in some of that. How long can you leave it before returning the guinea pigs?

I just waited until it was dry and put my piggies back then.
