I always swore we'd never get a piggy with black nails... Well, oops - Sassy has two feet worth or the razor sharp type.

Any tips on how to cut them? Will have the cornflour on hand...

Georgie had black nails on her two front feet, one white( very visible in my latest post) and one ginger.
In all honesty, i would just take the very tips off but maybe do it more often than the others. At the end of the day there is no certain way to miss the quick so minimal cutting is best.

And cornflour and tissues on hand, they do forgive you very quickly. Has she still got tiny baby nails?

My boy Ugo has two black back feet's and I just cut the very tip of the nails. Because I didn't want to made him bleed. And everything went well.

I've got some piggies with left & right nails that are black & white. I tend to do the white ones first then try to get the same amount cut on the black ones. Touch wood the only blood I've ever drawn was from a black one yet.

No they are looking adulty now but still sharp. Vimto's are still pointy, mini pig like - however she is now weighing 1.084g and just bit me again lol I am going to have to get a suit of Armour with this one...

Thanks, we intend just to trim lightly and often

Thanks, good idea to try and estimate the same amounts.

I have 5 piggies with black nails and I take the tips off and wait a few days then take a little more off to allow the quick to recede :)

Vimto sounds very like Tia, she still has needle like baby nails which are oh so sharp, I still barely take anything off them. She is about 16months now so i would have thought she would have grown into some adult nails- I can always hope ;)

You may try to do them against some lamp light, so the ligh can shine through; somebody mentioned using a surface that can be lighted from below.
If a piggy has lighter nails, I cut those first, so it gives me a measure on how far back to cut. If in doubt, I cut less; so far I haven't had any accidents. I have got quite a few piggies with completely black nails now - Tegan's right front paw, Terfel and Mali's back feet.

ditto this :-)

If you have a nice little led torch, you can place it behind the nail to see where the quick is. Be aware that white leds are usually daylight spectrum so don't shine it in anypigs or anyones eyes.

We did DT's once every 5 days when she was quite bad - tips only.. I will put my hand up and say that I was frightened the first few years we had her so they curled sideways.. We got them down to a good length very gently over about 2 months and they grew back straight (except for the little finger). When I say tips, I mean about 1 or so mm's. Literally shavings.

Urgh black nails are a total pain. Rodney has all black nails, and they are really hard to trim. I only ever take a bit off, so a couple have curled slightly. It's terrifying! You get used to it, but you won't ever want to go crazy.

Saying that Billy has white nails & his are curled a little. He is a nightmare groomer unless bribed with grass - and at the moment that is all dried up! Gulp....

Grass, basil, thyme, coriander, parsley, anything to take their mind off what a cruel and heartless slave you are LOL

I know it will be awkward with guineas but a nail file - once you start getting a little close to the nerve the guinea will let you know.

I have a guinea with three black nails but luckily they are in their chicken coop at the moment so housed partly on concrete. I've heard sandpaper is good to
