Hello,

I’ve noticed a big black ring around my guinea pigs nose and can’t find anything about it on the Internet, a few people that have had similar things have said it turned out to be newspaper ink but my guineas don’t have news paper, does anyone have any idea what it is or have had any similar problems?

Thank you

It looks like your piggy has had an almighty sneeze of something dirty/dusty having gone up their nose?

Thanks for your reply! It’s been there for a couple of weeks now and there’s nothing dirty in the cage of that colour, I clean there cage almost every day for them! Do you think there’s something in his nose then?

If in doubt, please have it seen by a vet. Unfortunately we can't do hands-on examinations.
All we can do is guess as much as you do in these kind of cases where there is no glaringly obvious pointer. Our own guesses can only be as good as the information you provide. That is the downside of any online place - we can never replace a vet visit nor are we qualified to replace them. It can even be just a harmless natural skin discoloration - but we can't judge that without handling the piggy and being able to check th nostril.

We can tell you when you may want or need to see a vet, help you make the best of your vet visit if access to vets with guinea pig experience is very limited or non-existent where you are, tell you what you can do to keep your piggy going if you can't see a vet immediately and we can support you during crisis care and recovery or in the wake of a loss.

To be honest it looks very much like his natural colouration.
Our Lucy had a slightly blueish-grey tinge around her nose and lips.
The first time our vet saw her she immediately suspected heart disease or another circulatory problem, until she establisehed it was a different skin tone under pale fur.
If it doesn't wipe away gently with a damp cotton pad, and your piggy is otherwise well and kept in clean conditions I would assume it is part of his natural colouring.

I was going to ask whether it might be natural skin colour, but if it’s changed then that would be unlikely. So my next suggestion is wiping it with a slightly damp cotton wool pad to see if it comes off. My now sadly deceased rescue piggy Felix had been living in mud before rescue and he produced a daily black nose for about 2 weeks as it worked its way out of his nose and lungs.
