Blacketta Chirping Like Bird

Hi.

Our dear Blacketta, a two(?) year old sow occasionally starts chirping loudly like a bird (she's a big lass!) This can last for twenty or so minutes. Is she pining for Peru do you think?

I have intermittently heard some of my pigs chirp over the years, but not that often. From what I've read, it's supposed to be one of those strange behaviors that humans have not figured out the purpose of yet. It does seem to mean something to them, as I know my other guinea pig would always freeze and listen! My husband once thought we had a bird stuck in the chimney before figuring out it was one of the guinea pigs!
 
I really like the fact that no one had figured it out yet. Just goes to show we don't know everything. They sure stop and listen when she starts. Maybe she's singing a folk song.
 
Beans chirps every now and then.. I've always thought she looks scared when she does it as if something has startled her..it's very strange.
 
My Cissy chirps quite a lot, she seems to do it quite regularly now and doesn't seem to care if I'm around her any more. She's even done it in my arms before.

I'd love to know why they do it! Some times it's a slow chirp like a song and other times it's quite fast like she's trying to be a rap artist :))

See her later this year on Britain's Got Talent! This is audio only as I recorded her round the door as I daren't disturb her mid-song. She tends to shut up when we're around, unlike yours CKF!

Cissy was like that for almost a year, stopping JUST as you get there. Hopefully Blacketta will gain confidence and stop caring that you're around one day too! :D
 
Wow, it's an amazing sound isn't it?! It would be cool to know why they do it but on the other hand it's fun to think it's their secret.
