Hello

I'm new to the site - I'm Mum to Poppy and Misty. Having some issues with Misty :( She has been back and forth to the vet for the last two and a half months and at first it was a suspected bladder stone/sludge but an X ray came back clear. She was crying when she was peeing so it was then thought it was a UTI and Cystitis. We got Metacalm and powder to line her bladder as well as antibiotics and it seemed to work a bit but it was back two weeks later.

We have now had 5/6 sets of antibiotics and she is still passing brownish urine. She seems to be in no pain at all and is running about and eating as normal.

The last time I was at the vet he checked her urine and we found she had a calcium build up as I have totally changed her diet and given her as much water via a syringe that I can and I have to take her back this Friday where she will get an X Ray to see i there are stones/sludge. I have also started to give her Cystease

I'm so so worried about her :-( Excuse the long rambling post but I just wanted to ask if anyone else has a piggie with these issues and if they can live with this staining of the urine ( not feeding her anything that would colour it)

Thank you so much
x

:wel: to the forum !

Sounds like your vet is doing all the right investigations . The important thing is to get the right diagnosis so the right treatment can be started .

Your thread has been moved to the Health and Illness section to make sure it is picked up by one of our health and illness gurus ...We will wait for a health and illness guru to answer your questions about bladder issues.

I don’t have personal experience of bladder issues, but I think that if it is interstitial cystitis that she has, then it doesn’t respond to antibiotics. Cystease and a change in diet, trying to find the trigger foods, can help. There are a few members on here with specific experience of IC piggies.

You say you have changed her diet. What have you done to change it? Piggies get a lot of calcium from pellets and water, so using grain free pellets and ensuring all drinking water is filtered goes a way to reducing calcium intake.

Hi. I’ve had two piggies now who have had interstitial cystitis which is more commonly known as IC. It’s an inflammation of the bladder walls and antibiotics only help in the short term.

symptoms present as blood in the urine and squeaking whilst urinating. Treatment is with long term pain relief such as metacam and a cystease tablet daily mixed with 1ml of water

My IC piggies have had a diet of cucumber, pepper, green beans and lettuce. 1 tablespoon of pellets per pig and filtered water
