Bladder problems

The stitches might be pulling tight in the incision or there may be some temporary nerve problems from the surgery depending on where they went in, surgery can be funny like that & has unexpected effects sometimes. Sensible to see what your vet says about it & hopefully it's just a temporary thing. Is he still on Metacam for pain? I'm just wondering if he's able to walk better about an hour after he has his Metacam? That might indicate that it's a pain / discomfort thing.

It's good that he's eating well :)

Yes he is still on Metacam he has to stay on it till wednesday. I had him on my lap so i could get better look at it he doesnt bother when i was touching it and moving it slightly so it cant be causing him any pain or discomfort but i will wait till tomorrow to see what the vet says. Its not affecting his mobility as he is still running around and jumping onto his ledge.

Poor Junior was struggling to eat last night so i went along to the vets today and she gave me some Emeprid for him to stimulate the gut. When he was trying to eat he seemed to be chew chew chew but not getting anywhere, i gave him a dose of the Emeprid a few hours ago and he managed to eat some nuggets.

Poor Junior. Hope he's a bit better now. Is he maintaining his weight?

I weighed him saturday the first time since his op he weighed 790g i guess that is expected due to surgery, he was the same weight on sunday, but monday and today he gained weight 820g so thats a good sign. He has the vets at 3.20pm today instead of tomorrow as she just wants to look him over and check his incision.

Good luck at the vets, lets us know how Junior gets on. Ace news on his weight.

The vet is well chuffed with his recovery she says he is doing really well considering they were on the borderline on whether or not to peform the op as he was quite thin and poorly, but he proved them all wrong.

That's excellent news, glad your little one is now putting on weight to. My P when he had bladder problems, also had secondary dental problems just something to watch out for but an increase in weight is a good indication that perhaps just the recovery was putting him off eating as much as he normally would.

I haven't read your full thread but just in case you aren't already maybe worth topping him up to help him maintain his new weight. x

Hi yes I'm topping him up with recovery feed every 3 hours should that get his weight back up? the vet checked his teeth while he was in surgery as well she says they are fine so it must be the baytril putting him off eating but she told me to now cut the dose by half so he is on 0.5ml once a day. When she went to check his incision there the little rascal has already pulled his stitches out rolleyes

That's not good, is there any blood? When my P had his Operation I couldn't even see his stitches the outside was closed with surgical clue so thankfully I never had to experience the removal of stitches - maybe a little cone would be a good idea? There was piggy a while back who kept chewing at his private area and he was given a little lamp cone to wear obviously this isn't a long term solution and he may very well rebel but it might be worth a go.

How does his wound look? It might be worth calling the vet and letting her know good he's still on the baytril this should stop any secondary infection but most defiantly keep a close eye on the wound, I know a piggy who developed a huge abscess because he decided the stitches where being removed. x

The vet checked his wound and its fine healing well, they put surgical glue on his incision also cause she had a feeling he would pull them out. This was his 2nd bladder stone surgery thats why the stitches were visible something to do with the scar tissue i think.

That's good news :), when was his last surgery?

Bless him, stones are horrible for these wee guys, P stones came back to but he was much older than your little one. x

Here's hoping he doesn't get anymore, I'd love to tell you I found a cure to prevent them but I never did. I did find syringing additional water helped. x

Oh tell me about so heres hoping. I syringe water 40-50ml a day to keep flushing his bladder and he is now on cystease also some serious change to his diet.

Your most certainly on the right track well in my opinion, good he's doing so well post surgery to! :) x

How many times did your P have stones and how is he doing now? my 4yr old boar is called Parker but we call him P for short what your little guys name or is it just P?

Patrick died in September he was about 5 and a half, I had him PTS when he got stones second time round. I wanted to have them removed again, the vet did blood's to ensure his kidneys where still working otherwise it wouldn't have been fair putting him through the operation unfortunately his kidney's showed they where already failing and the operation couldn't go ahead.

Glad Junior is making progress :)
When Harley had his bladder washout two weeks ago, he could not weight bear for a few days, almost dragged himself around which was scary to see but was soon scampering about after 5-6 days. Think it's the trauma involved on their little 'bits' and a mixture of pity ;) I made sure his heat pad was topped up and near to his 'tender regions' rolleyes
Hugs all round x>>

Oh I'm sorry poor Patrick well you done the kindess thing for him so he is no longer suffering. I'm guessing was the stone that was causing his kidneys to fail?

Bladder stones are a blooming nusiance they cause so much stress for owner and piggies.
I now give Junior the Oxbow adult low calcuim pellets but he doesnt seem to like them, should i just percivere and hope he takes a liking to them?

Hi thanks is Harley doing better now? Junior is slowly but surely getting there he is out for some floor time with his two buddies at the moment.
The vet did say he would take a little longer to fully recover this time round as the last time he had surgery he was running around like a madman after 3 days and he was a good weight then (1018g) and a lot stronger.

Harley is doing fab thank you - it does take longer for an 'older' piggy to recover from GA etc. so am a bit more savvy from our experience with him now rather than expect a recovery within a couple of days :) It was the worry of the morphine he'd had that panicked me but to see him bounce back (slowly) eased my concerns.
Certain Junior will soon be bombing around and you'll look back and smile to yourself like I am - they know we'll tend to their needs as best we can and become accustomed to being pampered ;)

My boys weren't fussed on Oxbow when they first had it either. I crushed up some of their old nuggets to a fine powder and then sprinkled them on top of the Oxbow. I did this for a few days, gradually reducing the amount of old nuggets that I crushed, and after about a week they were eating the Oxbow on its own. Now they love it!

I mushed some up earlier and syringed it to him to try and give him the taste for them......he is such a fussy eater it takes him forever to try new things he must take after me :)) I'm the worlds worst!

Does he like Avipro probiotic - you could try sprinkling some on the pellets, to be honest if there's nothing else he will just have to lump them. My pig's rarely eat pellets.

How is Junior doing today?

How is Junior doing today?

Hi there Junior is doing really well today he was first at the cage door this morning looking for his breakfast. The minute i opened the cage he was out like a rocket as the sun was shining in the window he went to sit in the sun spot in the middle of the lounge floor waiting for breakfast. I gave him a slice of cucumber, some sweetcorn and lovely fresh grass which he ate the lot.

Junior has his last post op appointment today at the vets hopefully he can come off his meds today.
