Hi all. Have taken Mavis to the vets over the weekend as I noticed that she was squeaking when peeing and pooing. John the vet has xrayed her anddiagnosed crystals and sludge in her bladder. He has prescribed meds (Septrin and metacam) and I have taken her off parsely and spinach. I am planning on giving her extra fluids, which is quite a challenge! I am washing her veg well and she drinks quite a lot anyway.

She has been on meds since saturday, but is still squeaking a little so will be contacting the vet again today about increasing her pain relief. I have also looked up about Pearl Barley from Flintstones threads so will give that a go too and maybe the cranberry juice.

Mavis loves the veggie chard, Does anyone know if this is high in calcium too?

Any advice would be great

This is the basic calcium chart from Guinea Lynx - the cal : phos ratio is important so it's worth checking that section too. I'm afraid I can't advise too much with stones/sludge/crystals as I've not encountered the problem very often, so do not have enough experience to be able to advise; I do however steer well clear of high calcium foods, luckily we have 'soft' water here so no worries over the mineral levels in the water.

Well trying to syringe fluids into her is a real challenge! Managed to get a mixture of water and unsweetened cranberry in - only managed 6mls though. She was really fed up by the time I had finished! Will try another few in a minute and then I need to leave for work. think this might be a long job! How do other people manage this?

We syringe some Avi-pro plus in water. both our girls (currently with UTI's) love it so we don't have the battle we do with water alone. Just a pinch in some water makes it taste nicer ( or so Cookie tells me :)) ) Hope Mavis gets well soon x

I find Pearl Barley is magical although 5months on and P is getting a bit bored.

Chard is high in calcium.

Have you tried filtering her water? I know ordinary tap water can contribute towards bladder sludge. Filtering (Britax filter jug or similar - Asda do own cheap version) is supposed to help.

Yes. I live in a very hard water area. I am going to get a water filter this afternoon. I think that this may be the problem as I have another piggy on permanent bladder probs and think that it could be more than just coincidence.

I am trying to keep them off parsley and spinach as this is their favourite things, but am very confused with the Ca:ph chart. I have tried to get my head round it but cant. Can anyone give me any advice on this?

thanks. x
