Gizmo had been doing really well since his bladder operation. He’s now 6 weeks post op. I had thought he was doing really well, he’s lost a bit of weight but was handling the new diet well, eating lots of hay and just lettuce and some vegs. He’s had no cabbage, spinach, parsley but then yesterday I noticed he was a lot quieter and drinking a lot of water and less hay, greens etc. Today there was suddenly quite a lot of blood in his urine, probably 4 patches of it. Could it be he’s got another stone or UTI or is it normal for him to flush out blood, maybe from his stitches? (Which I’ve been told are dissolvable but haven’t dissolved yet on his tummy) Any help really appreciated. Should I get him to the doctors in the morning?!

Please have him seen by a vet. It could be UTI, but it can in some cases be another very fast forming stone when the formation is not caused by too much calcium in the diet but by other uncontrollable factors in the rather complicated absorption of calcium in the body. :(

What/how much pellets and what kind of water are you giving?

Only given him a few nuggets these days, probably 5 or 6 a day coz he won’t eat the new oxbow cavy cuisine ones and he’s losing a bit of weight. Giving him normal tap water but I don’t think we have hard water at all here. Few more spots of blood this evening too and he’s been very quiet, sleeping a lot.

@GiznYogi I'd definitely pop back to the vet with him. He may have an infection that will need antibiotics.
Going to ring vets in the morning, see if I can get him seen. He’s looking very sorry for himself and bite my thumb for the 1st time ever! I’ve given him some metacam as I presume he must be in some pain.

Please step in with syringe feeding top up and consider filtering your water or switching to bottled low calcium water.
All the best!

He won’t eat the new nuggets but he’s still eating greens and hay. Vet told me critical care food is full of calcium and I wasn’t doing him any favours feeding him if too much, even though he actually really likes it. Seems like there’s so much contradictory information from my vet! I’ll get a water filter tomorrow. Going to take him to the vets tomorrow.
