My poor guinea pig Junior aged 1 was at the vets today for an xray and it has been confirmed he has a bladder stone the vet took me in to show me the xray pictures so he has to go in on tuesday morning for surgery to have it removed. The vet gave him anestetic so she could xray him that was about 10 hours ago but he seem a bit out of it, is this normal? :...

I'm not sure if he should still be out of it after 10 hours, but anesthetics can be hard on them, the only time any of mine has had one it was for major surgery and the pain meds afterwards kept her pretty out of it for about 24 hours @).

Sorry I'm not much help, but this will give you a bump anyway ;)

Aneasthetics and sedative drugs can and do stay in the system for up to 24-48hours. However after 10 hours your piggie shouldnt be too sleepy. However like all patients (human and animal) we all react different to meds.

Please make sure that Junior is eating, if he isnt then you will need to syringe feed him a liquid diet until he begins to eat on his own. Please also ensure he is peeing/pooing.

How is he today?

x.

Here are tips for post op care. It is vital that they eat and that you hand feed if necessary round the clock. It can make all the difference! Weigh him daily in the days leading up to the op as well as in the days after until he has stabilised again.

If you can, order Oxbow Critical Care and a probiotic like avipro plus (this brand is the only one that does not contain extra calcium) from the internet. Ask your vets if they have a spare dog metacam syringe - the wider, shorter opening makes hand feeding a lot easier.

Please notify your your vets that your boy has been very slow coming round from his GA.

It takes about 10-14 days for the wound to knit. Please always check on your piggy during the first night. In some few cases piggies can gnaw on their operation scars. Make sure that you have an out-of-hours number handy (available from your vets). Place him on a light vet bed or towel so you can notice any bleeding.
