Bladder stone prevention

He's still with us but it looks like palliative care is our only option.

The emergency vets is familiar with Bunny and found another two stones.

He told us that surgery is difficult to ethically justify but seeing him so bright and otherwise healthy meant that he didn't feel comfortable advising PTS for now, as long as we can make sure the pain is controlled.

He has an appointment with his regular vet on Monday, so we'll see what we can do.

Thank you so much for all your support. It really means a lot.

I am sorry you and Bunny are going through this. We had a similar experience with Bracken a few years ago. He was on palliative care for 3 months until we could no longer control the pain and we had to let him go. It was a bitter sweet time, letting him have all his favourite foods and lots of floor time and adventures with his friend.
I hope you have lots more happy time together.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. We've given him plenty of new toys and forage to enjoy.

We've also doubled his dose of glucosamine and he's on co-amilozide to help stop calcium binding to the kidneys.

His out-of-hours vet suggested that, although for most piggies his age he'd advise against it, he thinks Bunny is otherwise well enough and sufficiently robust to potentially have another surgery.

It's something we're carefully considering. We know he's been through two already and a third is going to be risky.

But we also have to weigh up the improved length and quality of life it could potentially give him.

Big decision but wonderful that the vet thinks he's strong enough 💐

Unfortunately, Bunny's regular vet suggested that another surgery would just result in the stones reoccurring again, so we've made the difficult decision to put him on palliative care for a week with a view to PTS if he doesn't show any improvement.

It's absolutely heartbreaking but we have to do what's best for him.

But any tips to give him his best week of all time would be greatly appreciated.

I guess his best week would be his favourite treats every day, perhaps extra lap time / free floor time, if he likes it 💙
Maybe each evening you could write a happy memory you have of your time with him and grab a fun filled fab photo then when the time comes you could use the notes and photos to make a memory book or collage 💙

Thank you so much. We're dreading Monday but have been making lots of great memories. We even took him to the pet shop to sniff out the treats and choose some for us to buy.

He's a cute little guy and it's lovely you took him to the shop so he could sniff out his own treats!

I'm hoping for a medical miracle for you and your piggie.

A shopping trip how fantastic and is he watching his favourite show on the tablet 💙

Thank you so much. Unfortunately the vet has said that there's nothing that can be done.

He said the bladder stones keep reoccurring and another surgery just wouldn't be ethical.

Bunny will be leaving us tomorrow afternoon and is booked in for a cremation early in the evening.

He's not just the kindest and most vulnerable guinea pig I've ever met - he's the kindest and most vulnerable person.

We really don't know how we're going to cope without him.

But today is for him and we'll continue to give him the best weekend he's ever had.

Much love to you and Bunny! You're giving him the best life possible now. It's fascinating to me that you know he loves the colours in a film.

He sounds quite a character. My thoughts will be with you both tomorrow, and the forum will be here for you too.

It's the scenes where there's a predominantly purple colour that he just seems transfixed by.

Thank you so much! Everyone here is so kind and it really does mean a lot. My fiancée and I are already devastated so we're expecting it to be a tough one.

We are holding you all in our hearts and keeping you in our prayers, I know it doesn't stop the heartbreak but he will be by your side and in your heart forever 🙏💙

This is what we really needed to hear. Thank you so much for these kind words.

Bunny crossed the rainbow bridge around 4 hours ago and is resting at the same crematorium that his brother did last year, with a strawberry and some cuttings of my fiancées and my hair. (If we're having some of his fur, it only seems fair).

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone here for your kind words of support.

Bunny was in pain and tired today, so today was the time.

He had a trip to the seaside with a drink of strawberry juice and a film night with a pile of his favourite hay yesterday (although we stayed in the car).

He enjoyed his fruit salad just before he was put to sleep.

Sending you both hugs, it's so hard when we have to let them go. I am pleased you had time to make some special memories with him, he will be with you forever in your hearts.
Sleep tight Bunny.

Hugs to you both.

I love the way you did so many nice things with Bunny in his final week.

Sleep tight Bunny 🌈 You'll see your brother there.

What a wonderful day you gave him, he has carried that love with him and it will be with you all for an eternity, you will meet again but until then remember him and he will always be with you 🙏
You made some important core memories there for you all and lots of yellow ' Joy' moments. 💙💙
