On Friday our vet removed this from our approx 3 year old sow, April:

It was on its way down her urethra by then! Ouch!

Pleased to report that she is recovering well but I wondered if anyone has any advice re preventing a reoccurrence? Thanks in advance x

Owch I bet that was sore, I've never seen a rough one before only smooth. Hope your baby is ok x

That does look really painful, poor thing.

Did the vet send you home with anything like Cystease? This is important in stopping a stone forming again.

There are also dietary measures you can take, such as limiting dry mixes and only feeding ones that aren't too high in protein or calcium and also only feeding low calcium vegetables.

WOW that looks painful. We agree low calcium foods, low oxalate foods and plenty of water. Give April a cuddle from us.

Poor girl! That looks massive and very uncomfy!

I can concur that cystease (glucosamine) food supplement capsules (initially one the contents of 1 capsule dissolved in 1ml of water once daily for 1 week, then reduced to half strength) can help protect the bladder walls from the irritation of any build up. Alternatively, some members have made good experiences with barley water - as much as the piggy will drink.

I find that a strictly low calcium diet (including pellet intake control and filtered water) helps me better with my own bladder stone girl that a ph : ca veg diet. However, some piggies do well on a ca : ph diet - it really depends on the piggy and what works for it!
