Carrots are low in Vitamin C - even some types of lettuces and tomatoes have more Vit. C per 100g (and you can safely feed more of these foods, and give a wider variety of high Vit C veg, to make up for the lower weight).
While the calcium is much lower than in other veg like kale, parsley and spinach, it is enough to cause potential issue when fed in large amounts (i.e. a full carrot) daily.
The Vit A content can, over time, affect the liver; however this is less of an issue due to the form of this found in carrots whereby it is converted to Vit A as needed.
The sugar content is also something to consider, carrots are known to be one of the more sugary veg giving it the sweeter taste.

There are other veg with no such concerns. While peppers are high in sugars, they are also very high in Vit C, so you have to give so little that the sugar is of no concern.
If carrots were of any notable benefit to the nutritional needs, guinea pigs would need to be given high amounts of carrot.
If given as a 'treat' among other, healthier veg, then you would only need to give a small amount each day and the concerns wouldn't be relevent throughout the whole diet.

Carrots are fine to feed, but it does not mean that they are the best and healthiest veg for guinea pigs.

At the end of the day there is only one food source which matters, grass, grass and more grass.
Forget all of the "treats" sold in pet shops Guinea pig nutrition heaven is grass and hay.

Well William's been on Septrin since Tuesday - the correct dosage of 0.6ml twice daily - since Wednesday. with no improvement at all. Yesterday he seemed like a shadow of his normal self. Just completely lost all of his 'omph' and he started passing a small amount of blood as well.

So it was another trip to the vets today. I took him to a different vets today. Our normal vets practice (the one that mis-dosed the septrin) is owned by a vet who practices from another of her surgerys, and she's the vet who knew in a heartbeat what the correct septrin dosage was when I questionned it and asked for it to be recalculated. I felt more confident about her, so that's who we saw today.

She thinks that he may have kidney failure, and that's what's causing the ongoing problems. She's asked us to take him back tommorrow so that she can doa blood test, so we're dropping him off at 08.30 tommorrow. If the tests confirm kidney failure, then she said that if he can be made comfortable and isn't in pain then he can have a steriod injection probably monthly to try to control it, administering antibiotics as and when neccessary to fight infections and things. If he can't be made confirtable and is in pain, then we obviously ahve a very hard deciosn to make.

If the blood test shows that he's not in kidney failure, then I'll speak to her tommorrow about how to proceed and what to do. I stopped by William's normal vets who took the xray two weeks ago to pick up his notes and his xrays, and she took a look at them. She confirmed no signs of a stone or anything else then, and whilst it is 2 weeks ago they were taken, said that if he was in pain then and now, it's unlikely a stone is causing the problem now.

I feel so sorry for poor William, he's been through so much and every time we think we're getting somewhere we get knocked back again. I hate seing and hearing him be in pain, and just want him to feel better. It feels like we'll never get anywhere at the moment.

Has anybody ever had any experience at all with kidney failure? I've had a quick search online, and am going to continue doing so in a moment.

Thank you in advance for any replies.
