Hello,

My pig chip has had IC for around 18 months. Over the last 8 weeks or so he had constant wee with blood, straining, weight loss and squeaking in pain.

We took him to the vet where he was diagnosed with bladder stones two of them. He had surgery to remove and was doing fine for three weeks. Now it's all come back with a vengeance.

He's on cystease once a day, metacam dog 0.4 ml twice daily gabapentin 0.15ml twice daily. He's on a course of antibiotics as his wee has become smelly and his behind wet with urine.

He's on low calcium diet lettuce pepper celery coriander. Tomato and apple once a week and I filter his water. He is on low calcium pellets and has around a 2 teaspoons.

Even with all this his pain isn't under control. Vet suggested today we add 0.4 ml of Calpol to try and get it under control.

I hate to see him in pain, when he's not weeing he's otherwise happy and playful and enjoys cuddles and his food! He is loosing a little weight.

I keep reading previous threads from here and I guess I'm looking for some support.

I don't know what to do, I don't know how to make him better.
The vet has said if this doesn't settle we will have to do another scan but it it's stones again he doesn't feel it's fair to put him through another operation especially after 4 weeks.

Please advice me .

So many thanks

I am sorry to hear you and your piggy are going through this. I am also sorry your post seems to have been missed by the health experts. Hopefully someone will be along soon.

I am so sorry your boy is unwell again especially after coming through his operation. Is the vet certain there are no more stones?
I will try to add some links for you to read until an expert comes along 💐

I'll put in my tuppence having had a bit of experience with stones.

I will say that 0.4ml metacam twice a day is quite a low dose post bladder operation. My boy (started at 1150g before his op, hit 1000g before his pain was under control) was getting double that. If he is sitting in his pee, then pain is the likely cause and painkillers will get him on the road to recovery.

As far as a repeat operation, it all depends on pain management. It would be soon, but if he has kept his condition it may be worth the risk.

Bladder ops are hard on a pig, and even my experienced vet underestimated the painkillers required. He recovered and lived another year and a half before the stones came back.

Welcome to the forum. I’m sorry your piggy is poorly. I don’t have any experience of IC. I Did have a piggy with a bladder stone but unfortunately he didn’t survive post op.

Hopefully the extra pain meds will kick in and he will be more comfortable and soon on the mend. Keep a close eye on his weight. If he keeps losing then you will have to start syringe feeding. You are doing a great job.
