Hi does anyone have any experience or advice regarding guinea's with bladder stone. I'm sick with worry.

Bladder stones

Hi, My guinea pig has just had a calcium stone removed from her urethra, her wee was smelly, gritty and creamy/white and her bottom was constantly wet all the time. Fortunatley she didn't have to go under the knife, but the vet aneathestised her and manipulated it out. She still has an infection now and is on baytril at the moment. If you haven't already done so and you are concerned at all, an xray will tell you for definate, that is how I found out for certain. Sharon.

I am having problems with my guinea pig at the minute also. She squeaked and lifted her bum in the air when she went for a wee and had a redish / bright orange colour wee. She has been to and from the vets loads over the last month. The vet dipped a sample of her wee and discovered blood so gave her a course of Baytril. She still had the funny coloured wee so he sent a urine sample off to a lab where it showed calcium crystals in her urine and luckily the blood has now gone. She had an x ray which luckily showed no stones. This is her forth week on Baytril and her wee is more of a bright orange colour now. I'm just hoping that any infection clears up soon. As Sharon has said, an x ray is the best way to find out if a pig has bladder stones. Why are you worried about this? Is your pig showing any signs? Hope all is ok xx

Thanks guys. Yes he had an x ray today and the vet confirmed one bladder stone. He is also gettin anti b's. Looks like he will need an operation to remove to stone but i'm concerned about it coming back as i've read that this is quite common.

Awww sorry to hear that your boy has a stone :( I no how I felt when I thought that Connie had one. When is he due to have an operation? When we thought that Connie may have one, the vet was going to do the operation the same day as the x ray but luckily it didn't come to that. Is he on Baytril? I have been told by my vet that Connie may be prone to bladder problems now but nothing can be certain. For the time being, I'd get him through the op and worry about it coming back if it does. Good luck and sending kisses to your boy xx

Sorry to hear about your worry.
I have had two piggies with stones in the past.
Poppy had a stone removed but without an operation and it was the size of an acorn. With sows it is much easier to remove them manually but boars are more of a problem.

Joey, had a bladder stone and had to have it removed surgically. That was a massive operation for him and he was only 6 months old. He had a cut all the way down his tummy and as he got older the wound became a hernia type of thing .. bulging.

Anyway both survived and went on to live very happy and long lives up until the age of over 6 years old for Poppy and five years for Joey.

By the way, what dried mix do you feed yours on? I have changed the one that I originally fed for years - I used to hear my other sows sweak when they wee'd but not since changing my dried mix.

Riff had a huge stone removed in September. Before then she had been in a lot of pain, bleeding and squeaking when going to the lav. She also tended to drip rather than go properly. She had Baytril and Septrin, Metacam and cranberry but nothing really helped, so in the end I insisted on an x-ray. The stone was the size of a baked bean.

Since the surgery Riff has been a different pig - bouncing, playing, running really fast. You have to get the stone out; they can't pass them.

The vet suggested that Riff should have an x-ray in the New Year to see if there are any new deposits.

Out of interest what dried food did you feed and what do you feed now? Also, did anyone experience strange coloured urine?

Gerty. I fed it for years and I must say that many of my sows did squeak when they passed urine.

I have gradually changed probably going through nearly every single guinea pig mix on the market apart from Pets at Home own mix. I have ended up giving all hutches two bowls of food ... either Tesco purple bag or Wagg in one and Science Selective & Cavy Cuisine or Cavy Performance in the other.

My money is on the Science Selective as there is no waste. The bowls are empty! :)

And no squeaks when weeing! -c

Mine have wagg guinea pig crunch :)

Thanks for the info! Bubba is on Scratch and Newton-Guinea pig 'Posh Nosh'. Do you mind me asking how much the op was and what was the average post op recovery time? I would pay whatever it costs. My vet is charging 350 min.

hi all, i hope you dont mind me asking.

I have a thread going about my piggie Scruffy http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=27657

i have noticed also that his wee on the fleece is someones red/brown and his wee is really strong smelling. He is leaving large clumps of white chalk is the only way to describe it.

do you think I should get him checked?

xx

When Patch had her op, I think it was around £60.00. She didn't need an xray as they could tell she had them when examining her.

If you are worried them I would get Scruffy checked out. X-rays will show whether there is any sludge or a stone and just by palpating the tummy the vet will get an idea whether there is any discomfort.

This is what is happening to my Connie but luckily she doesn't have stones. I'd say get her checked out xx

The x ray cost £60 (£20 for the GA and £40 for the x ray) and he quoted me £195 for the operation (if she needed it) but said he wouldn't charge me that much.

Thanks guys

Sandra - it will be to your vet - the lady you recommended! Hope they will be ok! x

If you see Nicola you won't ever want to see anyone else again - just ask Boureki she treks all the way over from the Medway Towns area! Nicola is a lovely lady, knows her stuff but hasn't lost that human touch, she treats the animals as if they were her own and the owners like friends. Good luck with the boys.

Thanks Sandra! I'm going to ring up to make an appointment for them both. Got to get Scruffy's files over from Eton though!

I will let you know how it all goes!

Ps sorry to boycott this thread - i hope everyones piggies are ok, would like to say thank you all for this thread!

I would get anyone looked at if the urine is discoloured. Try to get some on newspaper or kitchen towel. You will also find that there may be little beads of urine stuck on the fur. In Riff's case these were showing bright red against black fur. Gently wipe them onto kitchen papr to take to the vet. Alternatively you could put the guinea in a plastic bowl until he goes and then syringe up the urine, but I think that could take a while and is a bit unfair.

Hi. Well Bubba is going for his operation on Monday and the vet wants to get him for three days after the op. They said that it is a fairly easy operation but i'm still worried sick. I'm in London but i'm from Belfast so we are leaving our piggies with a pet sitter who also happens to be a vet nurse and she will pick bubba up from the vets and take good care of him. Being away will also add to the worry.:(

I'll be thinking of Bubba on Monday. At least he's in good hands. What do you mean the vet wants to get him for 3 days after the op? I hope I'm not sounding stupid :red Good luck with everything xx

Good luck Bubba, i will be thinking of you. Let us know how it all goes.
