Bladder stones

Our precious 2 year old piggy, Ruby, has been diagnosed with a bladder stone, plus urinary infection. She's on antibiotics for the infection, but what we do about the stones? I've been told that they can be removed by surgery, but often come back within a month or two, even weeks. Should we put her through the ordeal of surgery? Can anyone help from personal experience please?
 
One of my pigs Gizmo had a bladder stone removed in April, is was very large and being a male he was unable to pass it. He did however pass a small stone 2 weeks before he had his op for the large one. I would go for the surgery if i were you, did the vet say how many stones she had and did they talk you through the op? xx
 
Thanks for that - vet only briefly mentioned op as being a possibility. I'm just worried about putting her through an unnecessary ordeal which would have to be repeated. xx
 
I understand your worries. I know that there has been some success stories of female pigs passing bladder stones, with help from pain relief maybe you could discuss this with your vet. xx
 
Sorry to hear Ruby has a bladder stone. Was the stone diagnosed with an x-ray? Hopefully someone with Bladder stone experience will be able to comment on the operation procedure as their are a few members whose piggies have unfortunately gone through this.

Thanks for the healing vibes! She does need them at the moment. We haven't had an x ray yet, the vet just maniulated her back end (why are some vets so rough with small animals?!) and said he could feel something hard.

The infection is clearing up, but she still doesn't eat a great deal, and seems to have some difficulty pooping. I think we need to go back and get that x ray. xx

Hi There,

My Patrick had a stone removed 4 months ago, and is still stone free at present. Before opting for surgery I would make sure you have a Cavy Savy vet.

Do not opt for surgery without Xraying to check a stone is present. Surgery was the best thing I ever did for Patrick and I would do it again in a heartbeat if needed.

Update

In case anyone else has this problem, have just come across this article on the Guinea Pig Helpline website about something called Rowatinex, which can help lubricate small bladder stones, so they can be passed more easily, plus prevent them reforming. Might be worth a look, or mention it to your vet.
