On monday Blaze wasn't himself, wasn't drinking so we went to see Scott. Sub Cutaneous fluids and a Rimadyl injection. Told to watch for 24 hours and he really really improved. Yesterday he was back to himself. However this morning he had discharge from his eye and was not his self. So, back to the vet.
Scott (our vet) showed me the difference in colour in the skin just beneath the lower eyelid (one was pale and the injured red) and the way the light showed up the ulcer. Plus the way the dye they use shows up the ulcer under UV light.
Gave me gentamicin eyedrops for 3x a day and I also have to give him Meloxidyl (metacam) 0.4ml a day, for the next 5 days. In addition I am going to give him fibreplex to prevent the meloxicam upsetting his stomache.

It helped me a lot to treat Dizzy for an ulcerated cornea by sitting her in front of a tub of freshly cut grass on my lap and wait until she was absorbed with munching. That way I stood a chance of her not closing her eye as soon as I got near it!
The first two days were worst, because the eye hurt so much. It took me up to ten tries or more to get stuff into her eyes. (it rather went EVERYWHERE ELSE! ) If necessary stop for a few moments and try again!

But after that her eye healed quickly and the ulcer was gone within 7-10 days.

All the best; the good thing about eye problems is that they look really bad, but clear quickly.

I have it as meloxidyl, which is a different brand to metacam.
Scott did make sure to ask me which form of Meloxicam I have.

Yes I had noticed that. I was just doing a google search to see if I could find what the difference was. Not sure to be honest. I know there is two types of Metacam - one for dogs and one for cats. I always have the Metacam for dogs.

I got 2.4 ml meloxidyl prescribed for Llewelyn - and he's over 1200g. I think 3.0 (=6 drops) is maximum?

Helen i was so sorry to hear about Blaze 8...8...8...
Give him healing wheeeeeeeeeeeeks and special little kisses from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

i only ever gave 2 drops twice a day when Duke was really bad ......and this was metacam as well

The dose sounds high - if you stick with that then 0.2ml twice a day is the best way to give it. Last time I asked, Vedra advised up to 0.3ml once daily.

The concentration of Meloxidyl does not appear to be different to that of Metacam - both are 1.5mg/ml.
