I have no idea how it happened, but when I put my guinea pigs out Nibbles was bleeding from the base of one of his claws. I cleaned it with warm salt water but he was obviously in pain and struggled a lot. He's off his food and only ate a little of a piece of carrot I gave him. He's quite dopey and I'm really worried.

What can I do? I hate to see him hurt and it's making Nugget protective so I risk a biting if Nibbles squeaks in pain. Please help.

If it has stopped bleeding - nothing! Nibbles will be as good as new in no time; he's just feeling really sorry for himself right now! the salt will have stung in his wound. If he is still not right by tomorrow I'd contact the vet, but hopefully, he'll be OK by then!

I have had a guinea pig with a dodgy claw that broke a couple of times at the base which let to some bleeding.

:( hope ** piggy gets better soon though

Thanks
It bleeds on and off so we may take him to the vets but I'll see how he is tomorrow and work it out from there.

If it is still bleeding, you'd better keep an eye on it.

I'm sending the poor boy all my wishes!

Keep us updated hun! Hope your piggy is ok! <3

I remember when one of my past pigs ripped his claw off a few years ago; we used finely ground coffee granules to stem the bleeding! Cornstarch/flour would have been far preferable, usually more effective and definitely better smelling, but the coffee did the job when we had nothing else. :))

Good luck, hope his nail is starting to heal now.

A broken nail at the base is fairly common. The bleeding will stop by itself, that is what the clotting mechanism is for, so, leave well alone, except for clipping the nail where it has broken.

Ok the whole claw came off and we took him to the vets. She used something to seal the wound then said we should come back in a week if he's not better. I think he'll be ok though because my friend came round and he seemed a lot brighter after some fuss!

It is a relatively minor problem. It is people who make it seem worse than it is!!
