I've just put Bob and Barry back after floor time and just noticed blood on the floor of the cage. It seems to be coming from Barry's left front foot. Its a bit difficult to tell because he's so wriggly but he is licking it. It seems to have stopped now.
They haven't been fighting and the floor of the run is clean, so I can only assume that he's done it when back in the cage. What could it be and do I need to do anything to it please? Thank you.

Has he torn a nail? My pigs have done that getting back into the cage. Occasionally a nail would get caught and the quick would get torn. It will heal up on its own, though I would look to see if the nail is ripped right off. If it's hanging by a thread, I would remove it so it doesn't get caught again. When my pig have done this, I just applied pressure until the bleeding stopped, then watched to make sure that they didn't get infected (neither of them did.) Hope this helps a bit!

You can disinfect the foot with some saline solution either from the pharmacy or by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 pint/500ml of boiled, cooled water once the bleeding has stopped. Tearing off a nail is not rare; depending on how badly, the nail may grow back thicker.

He could have torn a nail. It's really hard to tell though because we've not had him long and he's not used to being held, so he wriggles. I will keep an eye on him. The boys are on fleece so I'll hoover it regularly and keep it as clean as possible. He seems to have stopped licking it now and he didn't bleed for long. Thank you.

Hi, today I managed to get a photo of Barry's foot. It's not very clear unfortunately (wriggly piggy) but it looks like it is his foot pad that was bleeding. Could this be bumblefoot? I'm worried about him. Thanks.20150426_124951.webp
