Bleeding from rear end

I don't know if anyone can advise but I have a female guinea pig who is just over a year old who lives with another female. Last weekend I noticed her sides where quite big, ie. she looked pregnant which can not be possible due to her being housed with a female. Then yesterday she was sitting in the cage all ruffled up and when I picked her up she had blood down below. I put her back in the cage and her eyes started to roll and she went very still. I got her out again and there was a fleshy substance hanging out of her. I took her to the emergency vet who said it looks like something has come away from her uterus. His first thought was she had had a miscarriage but I said this isn't possible. He did mention something about a phantom pregnancy. Has anyone ever heard of this? He gave her some antibiotics and painkillers and said to see how she goes over the next 24 hours but she hasn't eaten anything and does look very comfortable. The vet said she doesn't seem to be in any pain but she is a bit quivery and whimpers when I get her out which indicates to me she is in pain or feels sore at least. I am going back to the vets tonight but not sure they really know what the problem is. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
 
She sounds like she is very much in pain. You need to hand feed her to keep her guts going until she can be seen by a proper vet. Sorry, I can't say what is the matter. It sounds like a prolapse of some kind and it looks rather serious.

Can you get some children's nurofen from the pharmacy? 0.2 ml is the dose to give her up to twice daily.

Here are tip for hand feeding; mushed pellets are what you can feed her if you have nothing else to hand. Also make sure that she is drinking.

I have been syringing her with fluid which she is really reluctant to take and I don't want to handle her too much as I feel she is in pain but she will not take any food. I have tried several things even putting the food right into her mouth which she just spits out. From my many years of experience with guinea pigs I fear the worse to be honest. Thanks for your advice though.

Aw no, it does sound like a proplapse as Wiebke says (I'm no expert but a trained nurse so can only go on my instinct with humans :{)

Just an update on Tilly. Got home for work last night and she seemed more perky and she seemed to be eating some straw and was squeeking for her food. Took her to the vets and he was pleased with her and said he thought it was gastricenteritis (but I am not so sure). Anyway he has given her a course of baytril to take for 5 days as a precautionary measure to stop any infection setting in and if she is fine after that she doesn't need to come back.

I am not entirely convinced we are out of the woods yet though as she has definately perked up and is eating small amounts but nothing like she used to as she used to be a bit of a pig but time will tell, perhaps she just needs a few days to recover and I am worry unnecessary. So fingers crossed.
 
Glad she seems a bit perkier, but maybe you should check around for a more guinea pig savvy vet in case she doesn't pick up. I'm wondering if it could be a uterine infection.

Hopefully she's turned the corner though and will steadily improve.
 
Sorry I meant to have said the vet said she had suffered from endometriosis (ie. the lining of the womb coming away) which would make sense. So I imagine having that happen to a small animal would take it out of her and will be a few days before she is fully recovered. Thanks for all your advice and support though. I have heard of that vets in Ewell but the trouble is I work up London and by the time I get home for work it is quite late and the one which is local to me is open until 8.00 which is quite handy. Don't think the one in Ewell does late nights but hopefully I won't need to get a second opinion.
 
Fingers crossed that your girl continues to recover. Make sure that you keep her on a clean surface so no infection can get into her womb.
 
So sorry to hear your sad story about Tilly, maybe another family member could take your girl to the cavy savy vet for you to get a second opinion. I hope she feels better soon. x>>
 
Just giving you all an update on Tilly. She didn't seem too good all of last week, wasn't really eating anything and was getting thinner, but since Saturday she has improved, is eating again and started to put some weight back on. Must have taken it out of her the poor little love.
