yesterday i noticed my piggy has a big scab on his side where he has been scratching. I have just checked on him and he has made it bleed and its very red. I have put some quick recovery cream on it and wrapped his foot with a little bandage to cover his claws.

I have noticed lately he has been itching alot, but checked his skin and there is nothing visable, so he more than likely needs a bath. Will have to do that when his wound is healed. Or is there anything else i need to do?

He almost definately has mites and needs to go to the vet asap to get ivermectin. This is usually given in topical form, one lot on the day and another lot 10 days later. 48 hours after giving the ivermectin, you could put some bepathen (sp?) nappy cream to help soothe the area.

Other possibility is a fungal skin infection but treat for mites first.

Edit to say: mites are not visible to naked eye, hence the reason you cant see anything!

Tea tree cream, or aloe vera cream, will also help stop the itching and soothe the area a little. Ivermectin is definately needed to clear the mites though.

Vaseline is good or the spray on savlon contains iodine and protects the wound from infection.

I am not sure on vaseline as because its stationary and greasy sometimes it can attract bacteria. However I may be wrong.

Gorgeous Guineas do a sample size of something called Soothe Gel. I have some for my abby sow who is prone to bad skin and mites, when she itches and bleeds I often wash her and use the soothe gel and it heals the skin whilst stopping the irritation.

Definitely worth getting some

Charlotte - I see what you mean. I've used it before and if you completely cover the area any bitd would stick to the vaseline as opposed to going into the wound :)

ahhhh ok :) well Soothe Gel is still definitely a winner in my eyes :)

when my guinea pig came to me he kept itching and had a cut on its side
every time it scabbed over it he would scratch it till it bled
i took him to the vet and they cleaned it with saline and gave him antibiotics
when he had recovered a bit they bathed him in something to get rid of his mites
i suggest you go to the vets
good luck and send him my love
