Hello has anyone got any experience with ovarian cyst? can anyone give me some advice PLEASES !
My piggy started bleeding from her vagina and few times she squeaked once doing pee or poop(not sure)
Few months ago I took her to exotic vet in London because of her skin and the doctor told me that she has ovarian cyst and need to have a sugary to remove all her reproductive organs... I didn’t agree for the surgery because she was fine and the vet didn’t offer any further investigation like scan to be 100% sure she is eating well, walking,running around I just didn’t see any reason why I should put her under knife so easily ..they told me it will cost around £600 which I don’t have at the moment. I’m feeling helplessness don’t know how to help my baby 😢💔💔 Thank you for your help
 
My OAP Honey had very large ovarian cysts and in September she has a spay to remove them, after trying a hormone implant. Initially the implant helped but after a while her body starting counteracting the implant and the cysts soon started filling up again. I have a very long intense thread regarding my journey looking after Honey during ovarian cysts, pre-op and post-op. I'm not going to say you should have your little one spayed, but what I will say is, having honey sprayed was the best decision I've made for her overall wellbeing, however, her cysts were in total around 70ml of fluid and she would've basically felt constantly pregnant and so would've been very uncomfortable. I will get the link to my thread to allow you to have a more in depth read of my story.

I will say, £600 sounds extortionate. Honeys case was slightly different as she had other problems pre-and post op, which meant more care than just the op and op medications, however, in total it only came to around £300. If you are going to go ahead with surgery, I would advice taking a look on the forum for pre-surgery preparation, and also look around to see if you could get the surgery done cheaper. Obviously it's not about the money but sometimes exotics only practices up their prices up. However I go to companion care which is in pets at home stores, and their exotics vets come all under the same consultation costs etc. Maybe give your local one a call and get a quote. Potentially they could try the implant that I used. However this was actually more expensive than the spay and it's intended for dogs but it's effects have been found in guinea pigs.


I should also add, Honey lived a long while with ovarian cysts, and it was two days before she had the op that she bled, I was personally told this didn't have anything to do with the cysts itself as long as they weren't cancerous, and more than likely the bleeding came from an infection (which potentially came from her sitting in her urine) as I said my case ended up being a little more complicated, but I would suggest getting another opinion as the bleeding could well be infection, and painful for your piggy, hense the pain when peeing.

Advice on Spaying a six year old piggy

Here is my thread about Honey, feel free to read through it, it shows the entire journey from deciding if I should go through with the spay or not, to the end result of Honey being happy and healthy. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't risks, or if it wasn't stressful and heartbreaking with the fear of losing her. But I knew that as long as this was successful, the end of her life would be much happier and healthier.

There is not many exotic vets around...the one I go it’s the Royal Veterynary College in London , are you from London or know any exotic vet in London please?

Have you looked on the forum at the recommended vets?
 
Definitely see a vet to reassess the options... bleeding can be from infection, the cysts, a malignancy, etc. Without a firm diagnosis it's impossible to make an informed decision. It's also okay to 'shop around' about prices... vets can vary significantly in what they charge for the same surgery. Ideally you want to find a vet whose expertise you trust (that is experienced with guinea pig surgeries) but that you can also afford. Hope all goes well!

Hi!

Any bleeding from the vagina is a serious sign. There is a risk that an ovarian cyst has become cancerous.
I would strongly recommend you to reconsider and save up for an operation as soon as you can afford to.
Tips For Post-operative Care

I currently have a sow with a hard ovarian cyst which I have been recommended to have spayed this year before the cyst can turn malignant. She will be my fourth spayed sow.
PS: Most cysts feel soft because they are fluid filled. Around 80% of sows develop ovarian cysts, but the vast majority doesn't cause any problems. However, if there are issues, then you need act.

Here is our list of recommended vets: Recommended Guinea Pig Vets
 
I can't add much more to what has already been said other than a vet can easily be 100% sure of ovarian cysts without further tests, especially if they are considerable in size as they are easy to feel
 
Jemimah ended up having an emergency spay when her pre-op check for an abscess removal revealed an ovarian cyst that had grown rapidly in a week.
All went well and after a tense few days post op she’ made a full recovery.
I wasn’t charged anywhere near £600 for the double surgery and all the painkillers etc .
Hope all goes well for you

I was too told by my lovely vet that I could have scans to dictate true size of them, and to see if they were solid or fluid, but realistly there is no real need for this and would not have helped Kate in anyway to perform the surgery. I was also stated around £1000 for such tests, which just weren't needed

I am not from London, however, I'm sure there's other vets that may not specifically be advertised as exotics vets. All I could suggest without knowing the area would be pets and home stores (even if it's a short travel) as these vets have been built to be affordable but with great services, and not many people know this but they are completely separate to pets at home but they simply rent the space from the shops to enable cheaper running costs of the surgery, again allowing them to provide cheaper services without reducing quality. As others have mentioned it would be to look at the vet locator on here
 
How far can you travel?
Depending on where in London you are there may be a good exotics vet within reasonable reach.

Thank you I will give them a call and find out about exotic animals, I adopted 2 of my guinea piggies from pets at home, I also booked again apartment this evening at beaumont sainsbury animal hospital fingers crossed x

I’m from North West London my closet exotic vet is beaumont sainsbury animal hospital where I normally go, going back there this evening

Beaumont are on our recommended vets list but so is Matthew Fiddes at C J Hall vets SW14. You could also try contacting local reputable rescues Little Piggy guinea pig rescue or Furry Friends Animal Rescue to see who they use

Bella had ultrasound scan today and the doctor told me that there is no sign of ovarian cyst but there is a tumor in her stomach which needs to be removed so we have sugar booked for Friday ... feeling worried but at least i know what is wrong with her and what is costing the bleeding 😔😔
 
I'm pleased you got a second opinion and sorry about the news you've received, at least now she can have her discomfort taken away, best wishes and good luck with the surgery!
