I have two piggies and this morning I woke up to find blood in 2 corners of the cage. There wasn't a lot, but it was definitely enough to be concerned about. They are girls so my Mum first thought that it was a period, but I read that they don't get them. My mum has been basically watching them all day in case they bled again to see which one it is so we can take her to the vet, but it hasn't happened since. Any ideas on what it could be?
Thanks a lot.

sounds like a bladder infection. take both pigs to vets asap.

Bladder stone or urinary tract infection (UTI) can cause blood or bloody urine.
Bleeding from the womb or the gut.

Or one of them could have "rusty" urine (colours vary from rusty to orange to pink). This is clear urine that oxidises as soon as it comes into contact with the air and can look like blood. It is caused by bacteria. Not every pee is discoloured.

Discoloured pees can also be cause by food, like carrots, peppers or beetroot.

To exclude the more sinister possiblities, please take your girls to the vets and have them checked out.

If you can;t find a wound on them to explain the blood then straight to the vets with both of them for a thorough check up!

Blood from sow could be simply a heavy period , but that is relatively rare , my advice would be see a vet , blood ! You can never be to careful !

Ok :(
I just thought it was just a one time thing, because it hasn't happened all day again. How often would there be blood in the urine? Because they must of had about 50 pees today and only that first one was bloody.

deffo see a vet chick, maybe a uti, the piggies probably need baytril or other antibiotic (septrim perhaps?) good luck!

will check this thread soon, but on my honeymoon so cant come on regularly right now.

lots of love x

If she had a bladder stone, you'd only see a bit of blood.

However, if it was really only once, it could be from her season.

Stay on alert and go to the vet as soon as you see signs of bleeding, pain or illness! UTI or bladder stones are not to be taken lightly.

The trauma from a bladder stone can produce more than "a bit of blood", even more so if it is associated with a bladder infection.
