hi i have a himalayan guinea pig and i got told that them breeds can become blind she give birth last year and 1 of her babies is blind how can you tell if a guinea pig is blind as recently she has just been looking in 1 place

can anyone help please

?

i do not believe any specific breeds are more suceptable to blindness, however, lethal babies can be blind it is possible the baby she had was lethal.
does she bump into things if you rearange the objects in her cage? that would be a good indicator

If the baby is a year old as according to your post, I would find it unecessary to move things around...why confuse/stress her ?/
Only certain way I'd have thought would be to have had her seen by a vet to run tests, these are fairly simple and quick. One of my young sows was checked not long ago as we thought she had a congenital cataract but was an old injury that healed itself.
Personally, I'd leave her alone.
Never think of breeding from a blind piggy as this would be a disaster and a cert lethal litter.
A bit puzzled by your question tbh :{

Re read your post again - has the young one become blind or you do think she may be losing her sight ?

I believe that the father of my Pip was blind. What am I to expect as she grows up. She's perfect at the moment.

1 of the babies went 2 a new home and her new owner took her to the vets as she was going for her sister and it turned out she was blind i still have the mam who is 1 and 10 months and all she does is stares a 1 place in her cage

When you say she just stares at one place in her cage, what do you mean? Has she stopped moving completely or does she still potter around? Is she still eating and drinking well?

yes she is still eating and drinking and she will just lie beside her hay and just look at the same place she normally looks at her water bottle

Okay, good, I'm pleased she is eating and drinking. To be honest, I'm not sure if she is blind or not. As others have said, perhaps a trip to the vets would help? From my understanding though, piggies can live perfectly happy lives if they are blind - I had a blind pig when I was growing up and we had no idea until the vet told us - he acted completely normally.

I think a vet trip is the only option then to rule any illnesses out, they hide these things very well and go downhill soo quickly, hope she *** be ok!

Aw, that is sooo sad but piggies can lead a normal life if their cage layout etc. remains unchanged. Same as a human with failing sight really.
Could you take your girl to be checked by your vet at all ? It will confirm your suspicions - all piggies are supposed to have poor eyesight and go more by smell so as long as she is healthy, wouldn't worry too much. It cost us £40 for a consultation for our piggies eye examination, she popped some dye into it and performed a thorough examination in a darkened room.
Just want to add I'm sooo envious you have a Himi, they are gorgeous and my fave piggy x)

been on the phone to the vets and she is booked in on monday and she is no bother you never hear her she is the only guinea pig i know that doesnt squeak on ive even tried playing guinea pig sounds and she just looks then goes back to sleep

I'm glad you're going to the vets with her.

My mam's just been told her guinea pig Dolly has cataracts,, after she mentioned to the vet that she didn't seem interested in her food.
It turns out that because my mam was putting the food all over so they'd have fun finding it,, Dolly just couldn't see it.
Now the food is always put in the same place & all houses are kept in the same area & she's totally happy & just like any other guinea pig! :)

:)

The lack of squeeking as you mentioned, and the seeming lack of activity both sound like she might be a little lonely. :( Piggies are herd animals so should live in groups of atleast two. Rescueing a second piggie wouldnt cost you very much and may make your current piggy happier, there are lots of people on here who could help you with that if your interested.
