hi i have a young boar who seems blind but i'm not sure. he has pink eyes with a white circle in it. when we wave our hands in front or suddenly move he doesnt respond though he doesnt bump into things. today i was feeding him coriander and he mistook my finger for it and just started nibbling me but didnt stop. Also yesterday we got them a new hay manger and he started trying to eat the metal not hay and then looking confused. do you think this means he is blind or am i being just paranoid?

If your little boy has a white circle in the middle of the eye I'd say it sounds like a congenital cataract, however, it could just be that he's had a haypoke or similar and it's gone cloudy. Is it both eyes or just the one? Any photos?

Here is more information on eyes. I would have him checked out by a vet if necessary. Could you take a picture? http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html

Luckily, blind guinea pigs can still lead perfectly happy, fulfilled lives!

The only sure way to find out is to take him to your vet.
I took one of my new girls last week as she had what I thought maybe a cataract or an ulcer - almost like an opaque film, but it turned out to be an old injury she had sustained before we had her. Well worth a visit just to put your mind at rest even though piggies can lead a normal life as their sight is not too good anyway.
We were advised to keep a check on her and if there was any stickiness or we were worried, to take her back but luckily, within a week, her eye has become clear.
I wondered if it was because she had been kept on sawdust which had irritated her eye but since being with us and on vet bed/fleece, could have made all of the difference.
Best wishes
