How can you tell if a pig is going/is partically/wholly blind?

My pig Merry, who is my grumpy little baby, we have always thought his eyes have been a little, well dodgy. When we first got them, about, I dunno, 5-6 years ago(they are both 7+, we don't know really, they are fairly old.) he had a white fleck which appeared in his eye, and sometimes his eye appeared cloudy. I took him to a git of a vet who, quite frankly didn't have a clue, and said nothing was wrong.(they also had overgrown nails, and mites, we wanted advice and a little help learning to trim, and received none, from the practice's small, and big pets vet!)

Now I can simply say his eyes worry me. He is a white and black rex X(he has quite loong hair, rough, crinckled hair? he's in my avatar, the rescue said he was a rex) guinea pig. His eyes have: white rims, then a thin black ring, and a finer blue ring, and then it's all red. If you tilt him back, and look in the right light you can see behind the red a pupil. I would get a picture, but it just goes red eyed on me. I'm trying to convice mum to take us to the vets(we have changed vets!) with him, but I would like an idea if I'm worry all for nowt, or if I could have a big problem.

OoOoh dear i dont really know to be honest maybe take a piccie of the eye quite far away but zoom in maybe ?

He looks like a rex yeah but I'm not sure his eye sounds right to me as my guinea pigs eyes are just black ?

Do you have another guinea pig to compare him to ?
How long has his eyes been like that for since you noticed or have they always been that way ?
It maybe be just due to old age :-\
 
I have an abby x with normal eyes, and my sisters used to have two crested x (long haired) eyes were the same as my Pippin(Aby x). I believe they used to be fairly normal, and for a while appeared blueish. :o I know it sounds quite bad I think. Sighs… You can move your hands at both his eyes at speed and he appears unfazed. :-\
 
Ahhh sounds as though hes already blind if the eye appears cloudy then i think it means they have gone blind but a few of my piggys had cloudy eyes but recovered after a few days or so :-\
 
I am no good at this sort of thing but if you stay online for a bit, Maryh or Karenrgpr should be along and their advice can be trusted :)
 
Lol the rest of us are no good! We all just wait for those two to tell us the answers ;D try not to worry, it's probably not serious but if the worst happens i'm sure piggies can live with being blind. Hope all goes well for te little guy, good luck x
 
My issue is that as his eyes have got worse, so has he. He is getting a lump, he is grooming himself very well, but appears to find his food(water always stays in the same place and his box. When his in his run he finds his way round, but either stays right along the edge, or right in the middle, not the two at the same time. He tends to find a comfy place(both in hutch and run) near the food/shelter/water and stays there. So he seems to cope, with help, but needs cleaning out a lot more then his ex friend. (the now live apart.)
 
White rims round the edge of the eye are usually normal and sound like they are here. The guinea pig eye does vary in colour and depth of colour, to be honest its difficult without seeing him but guineas cope OK when they are blind providing the surroundings aren't changed too much :) I guess the only way you could tell is to guage his reaction to change? Perhaps just take him along to your vet for peace of mind :) That way you will also get to meet your them :)

Where is the lump?

If he's blind/partially blind and had a friend that may trouble him now he's on his own, maybe.

Is there a nearby rescue or rodentologist? They could recommend a good vet :)
 
most of my pigs just have black/red eyes thats all i know ;D ;D
 
Ive just found some piccies of piggys eyes on someones thread have a look if yours are similar to all your piggys ?

type in some of m piggys :D
 
My piggie bee has a half white face and the eye on the white side has blue round it, kind of like a human eye, the other side is just dark and so are all my other piggies eyes, so i'm guessing colour of skin/fur has something to do with it maybe? if your piggie has white then maybe this can explain the blue? x

Umm, his lump is just on his back, back from his ears a bit, if you look at my picture in my avatar, it's just above the little blakc snipit! It's quite small but meh another worry!

Hmm maybe, but his eyes keep changing…
 
His eyes are changing colour? I was thinking the lump was on the eye :) I would get that checked by a vet and ask about the eyes at the same time.
 
Yhea, I was gunna go to the vets about the eyes, because thats where my biggest concern is. I would love to have him in with pippin again, as they really looked after each other, but I don't think thats gunna happen. :( Anyone have any GPs who are blind, or have had eye problems. Anythink I should look out for, or check for(like symptons for diseases?) All, and any help is appriechated.

I will try get good pictures for you guys to have a look at over the weekend.
 
I "think" my piggy Howie is partially sighted, in the run i literally have to stand right over him before he sees me & in his hutch i have to wave at him or prod him before he'll move  :smitten: :smitten:

He has what look like "lumps" on the rims apart from that & being impacted he's fine  :smitten: :smitten:

You can just make out the "lumps" towards the back

The cloudiness will be due to caterracks, the eye will cloud over, however, there may be other problems going on with the eye. As for the lump, id go to the vets and get it checked out.
 
I think my Bully is at least partially sighted. He is dark eyed but one eye is outlined in white and looks "wonky". He hates be put on the floor and stays by my side all the time until his cage is clean then he is happy to go home again. If I walk round the room he will follow me but thats all. When I put in or take out something in his cage he nips me, which I don't think he means but does it becuase I make him jump. He also doesn't see food if I don't put it in front of him whereas the others "follow" my hand to see where I put the food, I have to wave it under Bully's nose! Apart from that he is a happy pig, very headstrong and very bitey!

I would get the lump checked out though.
 
The lump looks like fatty eye.This does not bother the pigs and there is no treatment.I have had lots of pigs with this and they are otherwise healthy and happy.

Blind pigs can do very well,.They seem to find their way to the food bowls o.k.!.I have had several blind piggies and have not had any problems with them.


Piggy eyesight is not very good anyway,they rely on the senses of smell and sound,which are both very acute.I am sure mine can hear the rattle of plastic shopping bags before I open the front door!.
 
My old guinea girl appears to be completely blind. She doesn't have any problems finding her way around the hutch, she knows where everything is. The only thing I had to take out was the hay rack because she seemed to always bump into it. She is also deaf so she doesn't know I am there most of the time until I touch her or she smells food if I have it. I also had a piggie once with fatty eye which caused her no problems at all.
