Emergency Bloat Advice!

I understand totally about lack of sleep, I had 8 weeks of post op problems with Petal, she had very soft poos afterwards & minor bloat events & I had to syringe feed during the night in those months :( Whereabouts in the UK are you? The cysts can be aspirated but only by a very competent Exotics vet, I wouldn't suggest it unless you are certain your vet is experienced enough to do it x

I'm based in South East London - my vet is cavvy savvy in terms of her knowledge base and approach - she is also a rabbit specialist and appreciates the similarities but also clear differences in g.pigs to rabbits - but I'm not sure how far her practical experience goes with specific procedures like aspirating

Mmmm ok, I ask because was it her that prescribed Baytril? It's something my vet never gives :( My vet aspirated a large ovarian cyst on one of my piggies & relieved the size of it, then gave the Chorulon injections, we only needed 2. What is she suggesting if the injections don't work? x

it was another vet in the practice they perscribed the baytril - the vet we've been seeing now is called Kate. I also now only book appointments with her.

She has since written into Scruffs notes that she should only be treated with other options from now on in terms of antibiotics - septrin?

She's suggesting we may have to spay, but is also very wary due to Scruffs age - she is just over 5 (as am i)

Spaying is a major op, but it is usually the after care that decides the outcome. Be prepared to intensively nurse her including through the night immediately after. If this vet is a rabbit specialist, they are notoriously difficult to anaesthetise safely, so she should be fine with guinea pig GAs. I am wondering if she is able to aspirate the cysts if she just gives your piggy a brief whiff of gas first, that would be far less invasive. You need to ask her how many spays she has done & what are the odds of mortality x

Btw I think you may have already been told about Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabit Clinic; he would certainly be your best bet for a positive outcome should she need her ovaries removing x

Thanks for all your advice, I will have a long chat with Kate on Tuesday.

I'm not sure that I would be able to get up to Simon as I don't have a car - I think that long on a train may be too much for scruff?

Scruffs certainly not giving up yet so nor am I! Xx

I think you can get trains to Northampton from London, many members do use trains, best to go off peak during the day when it is quieter & maybe ask Furryfriends for directions from the station & fill the carrier up with lots of hay x

Depending on how the next week goes I will ring them at least to get a view :)

Just a quick update - another long night, but had a glorious barrage of poos at 4:30!

She's still bloated today, but happy in herself x

Just got back from the vets - some good news is that I can't hear the hollow sound at the moment.

On the bad side the vet can still feel the cyst. She had given her the last hormone injection and is booked in next Wednesday for another ultrasound.

We had a conversation about trying to go with aspirating the cyst instead of the spay first - depending on what the ultrasound shows.

I know that there are still risks with this @Poppy'sMum I was wondering if you could explain to me a bit more about what this could mean for Scruff?

My Maddie also had her cyst aspirated. It was done conscious, and we were there for the whole thing. It was at the vets where I sometimes volunteer at clinic though so am not sure if that was normal or not. Other vets may use a whiff of gas. It didn't take long though, but like I said before we don't know if it would have refilled as we lost her a few weeks later due to an unrelated illness. I think some vets drain the cyst and then follow up with further injections.

Definitely think the cyst is connected with this bloating.

Still suffering with it, but still eating pooing and drinking

I hope you get some answers when she has the ultrasound. I know with my Millie her cysts really affected her gut. They didn't need treating though as one day they were no longer there and all her issues stopped. It was all really strange to be honest.

That sounds bizarre Helen!

The dissapointing this is this suggests that the hormone treatments haven't been effective - of course we won't have any real answers until her scans on Wednesday, where the vet will also make the decision about aspirating.

The funny thing is because of the strict massage, Zantac and exercise routine you wouldn't know anything was wrong with her just to look! Her poo and urine output is still good, She still runs about, is inquisitive and as cheeky as ever. Only when I tap her sides/massage I know she is still boated.

Of course it's a good thing she's not lethargic, or suffering but it's just baffeling.

I gave her a small warm bath last night because I thought that might be soothing for her, I hadn't wanted to until her hair grew back a bit more after being shaved - I've never seen so many poos floating about!

And as is life my oven broke this week! So on top of potentially more vet bills I'm going to have to find £200 or so for a new oven!

Or steal the piggies' salad :lol!:. Sorry that things are conspiring against you at the moment.

Even with that though @VickiA the poor girl is only getting the thinnest slice of cucumber and a tiny bit of herb - I'm too nervous that veg will make the bloating worse! (Even if it doesn't seem to now be Bloat with a capital B just bloatyness)

Not sure if a bit of cucumber and herb will make a very satisfying human dinner!

Just to update, we still have a happy piggy.

She's still suffering with bloatyness, and has periods in the day where she seems uncomfortable.

But carrying on with medication and massages and she's still eating well.

Starting to get very nervous about the outcome of Wednesday..

hope everythings ok alanaf x glad she seems to be improving x

yes thankyou still quite down but trying to keep luigis spririts upxx. a sow date at weekend didn't go very well but hes having a live in bonding session hopefully next weekend at the rescue xx . will keep fingers crossed yours starts to fully recover now as you must be exhausted xx

Hopefully he manages to find himself a nice wife :) it may just take him a bit of time to getting around to the idea of meeting new pigs.

Give him a big hug from me!

Thank you, On Wednesday she's got another ultrasound and the vet is going to decide whether to aspirated the cyst (hopefully no more have appeared) or whether her only option will be a spay - really hoping this won't be the case.

I'm absolutely shattered, but she is sat on my lap at the moment for a massage and has the pinkest ears (I know it's temp regulation but her ears always seem to be pinkest when she's content/excited) and she's eating lots of poos - makes it all worth it!

Could everyone send good vibes for scruff tomorrow ... Nervous mum here

Thanks Helen, I'm dropping her off at 8am then she'll have the ultrasound at some point during the morning - Kate (our vet) is going to ring with the results and then we'll make a decision about aspirating/booking her in for a spay... i don't even have hope that it's already gone because of the continuing bloating :(
