Bloat. Again.

yeah I'm just picking it up tomorrow from the vets.
I'm starting to really worry about this.
It's just not going away.

How long can it take to get rid of it? is it normal for bloat to last this long?
It's been over a week that she's had it.
I just gave her the metacam, she's much more comfortable looking on it.

I have infacol, which i just bought on a whim weeks ago. should i try this? Or just stick with the metacam, ranitidine, gripe water and spins on the washing machine?

My experiences with infacol are not good; it makes bloat worse as it gather it the gas together instead of dispersing it. You are doing already everything you can. Bloat can be so nasty to fight, and it can be very persistent.

I would recommend to speak with your vet again, but apart from giving you some gut stimulant like emeprid, there is not a lot more he can do. Bloat is unfortunately one of the areas that are very difficult to control and where medicine has not really made any advances for a long time. :(

OK, that's fine. I've just taken everything out their cage because it gets staney all excited and he starts chasing her. So hopefully she'll get some exercise and get it moving.
is the ranitidine not a gut stimulant anyway? x

I have been prescribed both zantac (i.e. ranitidine) and emeprid together for bloat. They work slightly differently.

I'll ask to speak to the vet tomorrow then when I pick up the fibreplex, if not I'll make an appt for Tuesday. Thank you @Wiebke :)

Yeah she's been back since I last posted.
She was admitted this morning.
I've just to wait on a call back to see how she's doing.
Please keep your fingers crossed for her
X

Thank you guys.
I'll tell you how she gets on.
I wish they could just stick a needle in her side and suck all the gas out lol
It's so frustrating that a bit of wind can cause so many problems.
She's still eating and she's still pooping which is really positive so I'm really hopeful.
I'll keep you's updated.

Fingers VERY firmly crossed!

She's home.
She was admitted because they were worried it was tumours.
She was given an xray and an ultrasound.
They said there is very little gas there, no tumours, etc. Basically everything was clear.
They had three vets examine her because her abdomen seems to blow up and deflate constantly (like it can change within two minutes) and when it blows up her abdomen feels really tight and there's a loud hollow tap. Which I'd noticed myself.
They don't seem to know what's the problem.
She's now prescribed fibreplex, metacam and metoclopramide syrup 0.5ml twice daily for a week and then I've to take her back.

She is more lethargic than usual and still having a tendency to sit facing the corner of the cage often.
Her appetite and poops are fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated?

P.s, any info and opinions on metoclopramide syrup would be helpful for me, ive never had any experience with it or even heard of it before today. X

They were also asking me what age she was but I've no idea. I've got this feeling she's really old and I think they think so too, like 7. It's harrassing my whole life cause I just want her to be a little young spritely thing and I always thought she was quite young. I wish I knew a way to determine her age. :( ok, rant over lol

That is the same as Emeprid, have you heard of that? I have used it before, but only ever for a few days, a week maximum I think. It may be worth speaking to the lady at Galens Garden about some supplements for her digestion.

That sounds like a pain response to me, what dose of Metacam is she on?

I would give you the link but my work computer doesn't like the site for some reason (it's not dodgy).

Yeah Ive heard of emprid, weibke advised me to ask about that, so that's reassuring.

She's on 3 drops daily and weighs 950 grams?
I am not good with the dosing in drops, any idea what that is in ml? and is it dog or cat? is the dose once a day? if so, it would be a good idea to split it in 2 to take into account her fast metabolism.

I think a drop is about the equivalent of 0.05 ml.

My 7 year old Ffraid suffered from increasingly frequent bloating episodes in the last months of her life ever since she'd suffered a partial pain related gut stasis two years before, which I controlled on a day-to-day basis with emeprid, zantac and gripe water (the last she reacted to best) at need. She was by no means as bad as Coco, though, and had stable periods when she could eat some veg and others when I had to hand feed. She also suffered from only partial severe bloat (one area in her belly that would go tight, but usually reacted pretty well to especially gripe water).

You are already pretty much doing what can be done.
