I would like to start by saying we are under exotic vet care. My boar has bloat again. This is an issue that keeps happening despite us following a very strict diet and feeding routine. He is on meds, massage etc but it keeps coming back. He has had tests including x-rays and ultra-sound and nothing obvious is showing up . They are reluctant to run bloods again because they can't take them without anesthetic and he reacted badly last time.

Any ideas on what else we could do would be appreciated. In between episodes of bloat he is a happy popcorning piggie that does zoomies.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear this :(

We had a bloaty piggy Treacle. She would bloat monthly almost... We had to keep a food dairy to work out the main food triggers and once our vet had ascertained that it was bloat and not caused by a blockage (xray checked first time) they were happy for us to keep Metachlopromide and Zantac in at home to dose as soon as she started. We'd have to take her off fresh food, get meds into her and gently massage her tummy to get the gas moving.

Just to add to, anything that vibrates gently is useful to help massage the piggies tummy. We have used a massage pad in past, others a toothbrush. Or gentle circular motions with hands. There was a really good thread on bloat years and years ago, i will search for it and link it

We have kept a 6month food diary and the vet can't find a pattern. We have a stock of meds. This is the 6th time in 8 months. We are on day 5 and it's not going down. We have zantac, metacam (now licensed for g.pigs) and infacol along with injections at the vets and vit c drops. His fur goes funny and starts falling out with each episode too. Sigh. I've never had a piggie this bad in all the years I've had them.

So sorry, that is hard....

Emeprid (metachlopromide) is one to add into the list there it works on different part of gut to Zantac would speak to vet about adding this to regime so they work well together.. Jury is out on Infacol as it makes the gas go to one big bubble.... Some vets like it some don't.

Which vets do you use? They sound like they are doing all the right things for sure here

Sending lots of love to your boy

Hillman's Cannock and manor vets. They work together with Dede. I live Walsall but travel. I'm up with Mr now when I should be in bed.

Pic attached of happy healthy Dede (we adopted him with a name I couldn't pronounce so it got shortened).
