Hi! One of boys has been bloated for the last week and 4 days. We went to the vet, he got meds and a perfusion with liquids and vitamins. In this period of time i took him to vet 2 times for perfusions as his stomach was very tensed while continuing the treatment at home with metoclopramide, medicinal charcoal, biotics and syringe feeding as he lost appetite. Everytime we came from the vet his belly was deflating but while at home, while the night progressed his belly would get big again. I am not feeding him veggies at all, just critical care and he eats some hay but not much. If i let him roam in the room, he is happy piggie and goes exploring.
How long will this take before he gets back to himself? Vet said there is nothing else to do to him, only to put him on perfusions again. There are moments in the day when his tummy and acceptable and after a few hours he is a balloon again. He gets metoclopramide 2x day, charcoal 1 -2 times depending on how much gas he has

Hi!

Unfortunately until you can find the cause of the bloating, there is not a lot more you can do. Bloat comes in waves and is not easy to treat; it can last for weeks.:(

You can find more information in our bloating guide link in the previous post; the medical advice has been proof-read by a very experienced guinea pig keeping vet nurse.

I read it since he started to bloat day 1. I don't know what else to do to him ... now is ok with tummy, few hours later is a football bal

My boy is feeling better since Monday, he is pretty much himself now. Started annoying my other pigs, eats hay alone, drinks at least 100 ml water/day, he comes to me when i start giving the food. I kept him away from the veggies, just with hay and i kept forced feeding to ensure he has enough food in the system (like 40 -60ml/day). Gave him a tiny bit of carrot and he just demolished it, he eats his nuggets and is doing mountains of poop. However, there is still a problem ... he keeps losing weight and i don't understand. If he makes mountains of good looking poo it means there is food in the system, why he keeps losing weight? When he was sick and went to the vet, he got weighted and he was 960g, now he is 860g. I've been weighting him for the last 3 days in the morning before food, he keeps losing like 15g overnight 890 - 875 -860g. Is this because of the lack of veggies? I am worried not be something else

Weight loss is never due to lack of veggies, It’s always due to reduced hay intake as hay is 80% of their daily food intake and veggies is just 15%. You cannot judge hay intake by eye so it may look like he is eating enough but if he is still losing weight, then he isn’t actually eating enough. Continue to syringe feed him until his hay intake increases and he can maintain his weight. While 15g loss isn’t a huge amount in itself, if it forms part of a continual downward trend, then it is of concern.

Thank you, it makes sense. I assumed he is eating enough hay because he does lots of poos. But now i'm thinking maybe those poos are from the critical care. It will be difficult to figure out when his poos are many because of hay or critical care. Will keep a close eye on him. I syringe him during day but not during night, thought he would eat himself
