Hi,

We have just noted my girl Aspen is bloated. Stomach hollow to tap and straining to poop. She seems more alert now we have her on our knees bouncing her. What can I do?

Bloat is very serious in piggies, you really need to get her to a vet tonight. Has she eaten too many veggies or grass?

Please have her seen by an out-of-hours vet as an emergency. Ask for zantac (gas breaking) and metoclopramide (gut stimulant).
If you have got an electric tooth brush or a car, then the vibrations can also help to shift the gas.

If necessary, get dentinox colic drops for infants from the supermarket. They contain the same active ingredient as zantac (activated dimeticone) and were recommended to me by my local vet.

Have phoned the vet but not answering GRR- will keep trying. Only have Emeprid - will that help in meantime?

Emeprid is Metachlopromide.

Gently massage the sides of her tummy, as Wiebke said anything that vibrates like the head of any electric toothbrush can also help.

Any poo at all?

Yeah poo coming out very slowly but surely - seems painful to her. Giving her lots of massage and rubs. Poop stinks!

Going to vet at 9.50 x

I agree she needs the vet tonight, hope you can get through. I second the massage recommendations.

I also recommend Woodwards Gripe water which helps to disperse gas bubbles and Dioralyte too. If possible the vet needs to xray to rule out a blockage.

Thanks Helen.

Got an appointment in 40 mins. One thing after another with her. Where can I buy the Gripe water?

He poop stinks- poor thing.

Emeprid is also a gut stimulant; better than metoclopramide, but the latter is usually at hand in general practices. ;)

Gripe water you can get in supermarkets or pharmacies.

I last got it in Sainsburys (a nice tall man got it down off the shelf for me). It is a white bottle with a pink label. I dose at 3ml every few hours.

Pain relief, even Buscopan will help but if the vet can prescribe Metacam then that's ok too.

Thanks very much.

Anything I should as for that's not been suggested? X

I got my dentinox in Sainsbury's as well.

Gas-breaker and gut stimulant are what you need. Ideally some painkiller as well. If the bloat is going on, you may need to hand feed to keep the guts going and rehydrate.

Sorry about the poorly piggy and worried owner, but these threads are useful with advice , so we know what to be stocked up on, just in case.

Her tummy is hollow and poop is coming out soft and wet- fingers crossed the Emeprid takes effect x

Will send hubby to Sainsburys after vet x

You may need to stay up during the night and give some gas-breaker (up to 2ml per go with zantac) about every two hours with some massaging, but hopefully that will do the trick.

Just to let you know that my wee Aspen passed away this morning in my arms. She went down hill very quickly and there wasn't time to scramble to the vet. She was munched loved and we will miss her dearly. I'm devastated :( :( :(

I am ever so sorry; having lost my Ceri to bloat earlier this year I feel for you. There is still comparatively little that we can do. :(
